Unpaid work is relevant

Identify the skills you’ve been using during your time away from the workplace that are relevant to work. These skills might have been developed or enhanced through raising your family, interacting with government agencies, caring for others, volunteer work, or hobbies.

These are your ‘transferrable skills.’ To identify these skills, write down the activities you’ve been doing recently and then list the skills you’ve been using to do them.

Examples of transferrable skills include budgeting, organising, time management, communicating ideas, trying new things, identifying opportunities, planning, prioritisiation, and bringing people together.

Once you have a list of your transferrable skills, go back and note how these skills can be used in the workplace.

Skills from your previous employment

Think about the skills you’ve developed while completing activities in your previous roles. These are your ‘job-specific skills’ which can be applicable to roles at ANZ regardless of the industry you gained them in.

Identify the skills you think you’ll need to update and make note of how the Return to Work Program could help you to refresh them.

ANZ focuses on getting the right person for the job, regardless of age. What’s important is that you have the skills and experiences most relevant to the job.

One way you can check that you’re highlighting your skills and experience clearly is to record yourself answering the two questions below. Listen / watch the recording and take notes as if you were an employer in an interview setting. Check that your desired points came across clearly.

1. Why do you think you’re the right person for the job? (What can you offer?)
2. What makes you stand out? (What unique skills and experience do you have? Consider mentioning your achievements also.)

Planning, cooperation, and support from others is important when returning to work after a break. Identify your current supports and then investigate any additional ones you might need to be successful in a new role.

You may need to set small, easily achievable goals when you first start back at work. As your confidence and knowledge grow, you can revise or build on them.

Think about the hours you’ll be able to manage and discuss these during the interview process. If successful, you can discuss any necessary changes you might need with your line manager.

Our Return to Work Program is most effective if you prepare in advance and tell us what you need.

Think about the kind of support you’ll need for your return and what you’ll need to deliver your best in the role. Consider:

• the type of work that’ll suit you (full-time, part-time, permanent or fixed term contract roles)
• how you want to structure your time (fixed hours per day versus flexible hours per day)
• where you want to work (fully in the office or some of the time at home),

and then continue to have conversations with your line manger as you and your support networks become more comfortable with your new situation.
