Job Summary-

General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems, a premier provider of ordnance weapons and tactical systems to the U.S. Department of Defense and allied nations, is seeking a Tool & Gage Maker to join our Saco Operations team. We are about supporting the mission of the warfighter. Our products can be found with every U.S. Military branch with allies around the world. The Tool & Gage Maker #2 sets up and operates various types of conventional metal working machines such as milling machines, grinders, etc. Routinely works to gagemakers tolerances of +/- .0002 under guidance of Tool and Gage Maker #1. Analyzes blueprints, drawings, sketches, process specifications, etc. to determine fabrication and sequence of machining operations. Follows established company directives, policies, military specifications, quality documents and manufacturing instructions.

 

Responsibilities-

Performs Rockwell Hardness Tests on metal to determine tensile strength and degree of hardness. Uses precision measuring equipment such as micrometers, Cadillac gages, height gages, dial indicators, surface plates, gage blocks, sine bars and plates, super micrometers, optical comparators, etc.

 

Must have a sense of precision machining and a constant awareness of the influence of cleanliness, rigidity, trueness, and alignment of workpiece and equipment during all set-up and machining operations.  Is capable of using taper attachments, rotary tables, grinding attachments, etc.; and is familiar with machine accessories. Will know, at all times, the type of metal, condition, hardness, tolerances, finish heat treat requirements, etc. of individual workpieces.   

 

Must be constantly aware of squareness of workpiece during machining operations.  Sets up index head and determines correct hole plate, circle, and appropriate number of turns for required division of circle.  Machines angles to minutes, degree, and second tolerances.  May works to tolerances of plus or minus one ten thousandths of an inch (.0001).  Indicates workpieces, vises, universal heads and tables, fixtures, etc. to insure alignment.  May use edge finder, dial indicators, magnetic base holders, etc.  

 

Converts from decimals to metrics and vice versa.

 

Works closely with and sometimes assists Tool and Gage Maker #1. Consults supervision if in doubt to prevent damage to expensive cutters and personal injury. Practices safety and good housekeeping policies and procedures.

 

Qualifications-

  • Must be knowledgeable of tool and alloy steels, designations, chemical compositions, and physical properties. 
  • Must be knowledgeable of cutter geometries, machineability ratings of materials and capable of calculating speeds and feeds for al set-up operations. 
  • Must know thread nomenclature and perform threading operations using geometric die heads, single point tool bits on lathes, hand dies, etc. 
  • Must know the classes of threads, pitch diameter limits, tap drill sizes, percentage of threads, etc.
  • Must know drill nomenclature to include various types and styles of drills, drill pint geometries, etc. 
  • Must be knowledgeable of work holding devices and methods of mounting wheels and cutters. 
  • Must know abrasive types and uses such as Diamond, Borozon, Aluminum Oxide, Carborundum, etc. wheels. 
  • Must know grinding wheel designations such as grain structure, grade, type bond, etc.

High school diploma or G.E.D. required. Limited supervision required. Must be capable of performing all tasks and duties of Tool and Gage maker #3. May be required to enter and verify information into written forms or database(s) as appropriate. May be required to perform other duties as required by supervision and follows instructions as directed.
