- Follow setup sheets, engineering drawings, process instructions, and shop floor documentation to set up and operate manual and CNC gear lapping machines.
- Install and true gears, workholding fixtures, tooling, and machine components required for each production run.
- Select and establish machine settings in accordance with process requirements.
- Operate manual and CNC gear lapping equipment to produce gears that meet engineering specifications for tooth contact, surface finish, and noise performance.
- Verify the shop floor documentation and blueprint have the same revision level before beginning production.
- Inspect gear tooth contact patterns using approved marking compounds and adjust machine settings as necessary to achieve specified contact patterns.
- Perform first-piece, in-process, and final inspections using micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, gear inspection equipment, and other precision measuring instruments.
- Monitor machine performance, tooling condition, and lapping compound effectiveness to maintain consistent product quality.
- Complete work orders in the order specified by the supervisor or shop scheduling system.
- Record labor, production quantities, scrap, downtime, inspection results, and process data in the shop floor scheduling system.
- Clean gears, fixtures, and machines between production runs to prevent contamination and maintain process integrity.
- Perform routine operator maintenance including cleaning, lubrication, coolant maintenance (where applicable), and routine machine inspections.
- Identify machine malfunctions, tooling issues, or quality concerns and report them to the Area Lead or Maintenance personnel.
