Supervises employees and the technical and administrative functions of the Ophthalmic Technicians. Acts as a technical resource for team members. Performs patient care, ophthalmic testing procedures and initial patient examinations in ophthalmic sub specialties as directed by physician. Performs clinical functions and assists with basic training of non-certified technicians, students and new hires.

A caregiver in this role will work 7:30am to 5:00pm.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Performs initial patient examinations, ophthalmic testing procedures and assists physician with related examinations / procedures as directed.
  • Documents patient information in the patient medical record.
  • Assists with training non-certified technicians, students and new hires.
  • Provides leadership and supervision of employees in daily operations.
  • Maintains staffing levels, approves and schedules paid time off and leave requests.
  • Coordinates and provides orientation and education.
  • Analyzes workflow and procedures. Identifies and implements opportunities to improve procedures, processes, speed, quality and effectiveness.
  • Ensures cross coverage.
  • Develops effective work team. Encourages and supports morale building activities and positive attitudes.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Knowledge of supervision and training/development
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) by Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) required
  • Three years’ experience as a team lead or one year of supervisory experience in a related field
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Associate Degree
  • Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) or Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT) by Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate medical equipment utilized to perform testing procedures.
  • Manual dexterity to perform various exams and hold equipment; good eye-hand coordination.
  • May require long periods of standing and walking.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required
