Include exact keywords from the job description, especially practice area terms and software names, because most ATS platforms use keyword matching to rank candidates.
Should I list every law firm I have worked at, even short tenures?
Include positions where you stayed at least 6 months and gained meaningful experience. Legal assistants frequently move between firms, and hiring managers understand that lateral movement is normal in the legal industry. However, if you had a 2-month stint that does not add value to your narrative, omit it. Focus on positions where you can describe specific accomplishments with metrics. If you have 10+ years of experience, you can condense early-career roles into a "Prior Experience" section with firm names, titles, and dates without detailed bullet points.
How important is the professional summary section?
Critical. The professional summary is the first substantive content a hiring manager reads, and it needs to accomplish four things in 3-4 sentences: state your years of experience, identify your practice area specialization, name at least one notable firm or accomplishment, and mention your most relevant certifications or technical skills. Think of it as your 10-second pitch. A legal assistant with "5 years of M&A experience at Kirkland & Ellis supporting $4.7B in completed transactions" gets a very different reception than one with "experience at a large law firm."
