Software Engineering Manager / Team Lead

About Fig Fig is a new Fintech start-up revolutionizing the lending industry in Canada. Named Consumer Lender of the Year in 2024, Fig is dedicated to simplifying the borrowing process to make it more efficient and accessible for Canadians. Supported by Fairstone Bank and Ontario Teachers Pension Plan, Fig is in a unique position to blend the benefits of extensive lending experience with the agility of a start-up. This combination allows the company to effectively meet the credit needs of Canadians from various financial backgrounds. The Role As a Software Engineering Manager / Team Lead at Fig, you will be a player-coach — spending roughly half your time writing production code and half your time leading a small, high-impact team. You will be responsible for a single product team and own the entire product surface area, including: - Customer-facing frontend applications - Backend services and public APIs for B2B partners - Internal admin and operational tooling You will manage a team of four engineers (2 senior, 1 mid-level, 1 junior), report directly to the VP of Engineering, and take full ownership of people management, technical execution, and delivery outcomes. Fig launched in early 2023 and has strong momentum, revenue, and real customers. The core platform is live and working, but this is still an early-stage company. This role is an opportunity to step into real ownership — shaping the team, the execution culture, and the technical direction while continuing to build hands-on. Your Responsibilities Technical Leadership & Delivery - Write production code across the stack and remain hands-on with day-to-day development. - Own technical design and help shape architecture decisions across frontend, backend, and internal tools. - Review pull requests, uphold engineering standards, and bring consistency to codebases and systems. - Take features from inception through deployment and operation in production. Team Leadership & People Management - Manage, mentor, and support a team of four engineers with varying levels of experience. - Set clear expectations, provide regular feedback, and support individual growth and development. - Hire engineers to backfill roles and support future team growth. - Foster a high-trust, high-ownership team culture focused on quality and accountability. Execution & Ownership - Own roadmap execution for the team and ensure work is delivered reliably and with discipline. - Work closely with product and stakeholders to clarify requirements and drive alignment. - Identify risks early, unblock the team, and ensure follow-through on commitments. - Take full ownership of outcomes — not just implementation.
