Armament Systems Plymouth, MN is currently seeking a Principal Safety Engineer/ to be part of our Environment Health & Safety team.  The home location would be the Plymouth, MN facility, which is a dynamic defense engineering and development facility that includes lab scale research and development facilities, with limited production capabilities.

 

Role description & Responsibilities:

 

The Principal Safety Engineer acts as the primary safety lead for facility and process safety support, ensuring safety is integrated into its development operations. They are responsible for leading hazard identification, building safety management systems and programs which ensure compliance with regulatory, industry and internal standards.  This role often involves mentoring junior engineers, developing high-level safety strategies, and engaging with stakeholders across engineering, manufacturing, and regulatory bodies

 

Ability to travel in support of analyzing explosive operations at other NG facilities, attend trainings and collaborate with other locations, <15% of the time. 

 

Job Duties: 

·       Develop safety management system and program documentation

·       Partner with Engineering to develop safe operating procedures, ensuring appropriate controls for hazardous operations involving explosive devices, high voltage, lasers, physical, or other unique hazards.

·       Ability to develop rapport with employees to facilitate open communication of hazards, including tracking employee concerns or near misses. 

·       Perform reviews to develop safe chemical handling and storage practices, appropriate PPE selection for light chemical usage involving solvents, adhesives, epoxies, lubricants and various processing agents. 

·       Facilitate Onsite Safety Committee & Management Walks to drive employee engagement and continual improvement. 

·       Perform new hire safety orientation and develop effective computer-based safety training.

·       Assigning and tracking safety related actions to ensure completion. 

·       Perform safety reviews of custom-built equipment safety to ensure appropriate controls, industry standards and best practices are applied.  

·       Support Process Safety Management compliance efforts onsite, including compliance to the site’s explosive site safety plan and collaboration with hazards analysis team.    

·       Primary point of contact for all injuries, working with employees and managers to ensure appropriate process is followed and employees are taken care of.   

·       Lead incident or injury reviews to identify system weaknesses and develop innovative solutions to prevent recurrence.

·       Facilitate onsite volunteer Medical Emergency Response Team

·       Perform ergonomic reviews of office workstations, lab and assembly operations.

·       Develop working knowledge to function as a subject matter expert for adherence to OSHA’s General Industry, Process Safety Management Standards, Department of Defense Contractor Safety Standards 4145 and company hazardous operations standards. 

 

 

Skills & Qualifications:

Must have strong multitasking, mechanical aptitude and problem-solving abilities. Well-organized, works effectively with little to no supervision, maintains attention to detail and deals effectively with ambiguity. Must have strong communication and technical writing skills.  Candidate must be able to prepare and deliver briefings of technical information, with clarity, to cross functional groups.  This position is part of a larger EHS team which covers multiple facilities/ locations that share missions, so collaboration with other team members is important. 

 

Basic Qualifications:

·       Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM field & 5 years of related engineering experience, OR a Masters degree in a STEM field & 3 years of related experience

·       Ability to Obtain Secret Government Clearance (US Citizenship required)

 

Preferred Qualifications

·       Bachelors degree in safety, physics, or chemistry

·       Experience involving explosives

Primary Level Salary Range: $98,900.00 - $148,300.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
