Machine Shop Manager

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Machine Shop Manager oversees all machine shop operations, including production and maintenance, applying Lean Manufacturing principles to drive continuous improvement in safety, quality, and productivity. This role coordinates the production of machined parts; leads and supports improvement efforts related to machines and machining processes for existing parts; and supports corporate and local engineering initiatives for new part development. The Machine Shop Manager partners with members of the management team to achieve individual, team, and company goals.

PRINCIPAL FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead machine shop employees in achieving safety, quality, productivity, and cost performance goals

  • Direct and develop machine shop supervisors

  • Use lean tools to build and implement a high performing culture including visual management systems, Engage and empower team members at every level to develop their skills and growth within BrassCraft

  • Standard operating methods and OEE

  • Create department forecasts, budgets and personnel plans and ensure adherence to them

  • Identify problems and opportunities and implement solutions to drive continuous improvement throughout all team members, machines, tooling and systems

  • Lead the maintenance process for machine shop equipment including performing and minimizing reactive maintenance, performing root cause failure analyses as necessary, implementing predictive and preventative maintenance systems and moving work from reactive to planned

  • Identify capital project needs and lead the shop in their implementation to address reliability, capacity, cost performance and obsolescence issues

  • Partner with Maintenance to drive continuous improvement on machine availability

  • Partner with Engineering to drive continuous improvement on existing parts and to industrialize and produce new products

  • Partner with the Tool Room to drive continuous improvement on tooling performance

  • Perform other duties as needed and assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Management experience in a technical field (machining, machine maintenance, etc.)

  • Must exhibit excellent leadership skills including personnel development of others

  • Experience working within and implementing Lean Manufacturing tools and concepts

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to build positive partnerships, while working collaboratively with cross-functional business teams

  • Good planning, coaching, facilitating and coordinating skills

  • Must be flexible and able to adapt to a rapidly changing environment

  • Demonstrated successful ability to organize and prioritize work to ensure timely delivery

  • Ability to function at a high level of effectiveness, flexibility, independence and initiative without daily interaction with management

  • Proficiency with computers and common software including Microsoft Office Suite

  • Ability to lift 35 lbs.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree plus 5 years managerial experience

  • Minimum of 10 years shop related experience

  • Familiarity with 2D and 3D CAD systems

  • Familiarity with the plumbing industry and products

  • Machining, assembly, tooling, and fixture experience

COMPETENCIES:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; demonstrated successful ability to build positive partnerships while working collaboratively with cross-functional business teams

  • Demonstrated successful ability to organize and prioritize work to ensure timely deadlines

  • Ability to function at a high level of effectiveness, demonstrating flexibility, independence, and initiative

  • Proficient computer skills required including Microsoft Office Suite

Pay range: $120,000 - 140,000
