Director of Engineering, Platform Evolution
Resmed is hiring a Director of Engineering, Platform Evolution to help lead the next phase of the Digital Health Platform. This role sits in an important gap between strategy and execution. Product direction is increasingly clear: reduce friction across the pathway from diagnostics through therapy start, improve handoffs across products and partners, and build more reusable platform capability across the portfolio. What is still underdefined is how that becomes concrete engineering work. The point of this role is to help make that real. This is not a maintenance role, and it is not a coordination-only role. It is a hands-on engineering leadership role for someone who can work through ambiguity, shape the first meaningful platform moves, and still engage directly in technical work when needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Turn broad strategy into bounded engineering bets that can be shaped, staffed, and delivered.
- Lead the first reusable cross-product platform capabilities that reduce friction across systems such as Somnoware, VirtuOx, Brightree, and adjacent DHP services.
- Build and lead a lean, senior team in San Diego with a strong bias toward clarity, technical judgment, and practical delivery.
- Work directly with Product Management and peer engineering leaders to reduce translation loss between business intent and implementation.
- Help advance AI-native ways of working by using software agents and modern tooling in real delivery, not as a side experiment.
Qualifications
The strongest candidates will be builder-leaders. This role is for someone who has operated at Director level but still has the technical depth and credibility of a Staff, Principal, or equivalent senior engineer. Candidates should bring:
- 10+ years of software engineering experience and 5+ years leading engineering teams in ambiguous, high-change environments.
- Strong hands-on development experience in modern backend and platform systems, especially Java, Spring Boot, Kubernetes, and cloud-native service environments.
- Real experience evolving existing platforms and product architectures, including decomposition of monoliths, scalability, resiliency, observability, and security.
- Strong engineering fundamentals: testing discipline, source control, pull requests, release practices, developer documentation, and automated quality gates.
- The ability to contribute directly to architecture, design, prototyping, technical decomposition, and, where appropriate, implementation.
- Demonstrable experience using tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, OpenAI, Gemini, or equivalent in real software delivery work, with a clear point of view on where these tools help and where stronger engineering judgment still matters.
- The ability to speak credibly both as a builder and as a leader about how AI is changing software development.
Why This Role Is Different
This team will start small, so the Director cannot be purely managerial in the early phase. The role requires someone who can lead, build, and help establish the engineering patterns for a strategically important area at the same time. The scope is also intentionally cross-product. This is not ownership of a single application or a narrow platform subsystem. It is a role for a leader who can identify the right reusable moves, work effectively across product and engineering boundaries, and build momentum without overbuilding.
Why Resmed
Resmed is building the digital foundation for a more connected sleep health future. The Digital Health Platform sits at the center of that work, connecting devices, patients, providers, and applications. This role is a chance to shape how that platform evolves next, while helping define what strong engineering leadership looks like in an AI-native environment. If you are a technically credible engineering leader who still likes building, has strong instincts for platform work, and has firsthand experience using modern AI tools in real delivery, this is the kind of role where that combination matters.
We are shaping the future at ResMed, and we recognize the need to build on and broaden our existing skills and continue to attract and retain the world’s best talent. We work hard to offer holistic benefits packages, provide flexible work arrangements, cultivate a workforce culture that allows employees to grow personally and professionally, and deliver competitive salaries to our team members. Employees scheduled to work 30 or more hours per week are eligible for benefits. This position qualifies for the following benefits package: comprehensive medical, vision, dental, and life, AD&D, short-term and long-term disability insurance, sleep care management, Health Savings Account (HSA), Flexible Spending Account (FSA), commuter benefits, 401(k), Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP), Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and tuition assistance. Employees accrue three weeks Paid Time Off (PTO) in their first year of employment, receive 11 paid holidays plus 3 floating days and are eligible for 14 weeks of primary caregiver or two weeks of secondary caregiver leave when welcoming new family members.
Individual pay decisions are based on a variety of factors, such as the candidate’s geographic work location, relevant qualifications, work experience, and skills.
At ResMed, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current base range for this position: $195,000.00 - $293,000.00 USD Annual.
