Position Summary: 

The Welder B performs a variety of routine welding duties.  They typically operate subarc machines to complete circumferential and longitudinal welds on tanks, heat exchanger shells and nozzles.  This role welds using gas metal arc welding (GMAW) and flux cored arc welding (FCAW) processes on fillet joints and groove joints with backing. Welder B operates and controls equipment from central console to operate rolling mill that reduces steel into products of specified size, shape, and gauge.

Measures of Success

  • Full understanding of relevant Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and the ability to follow all parameters within. 
  • Timely completion of all welding operations within the operational time limits and according to company quality protocols. 
  • Capability of welding fillet and groove welds without backing in both the horizontal and flat positions. 

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Works from standard drawings, specifications, WPS and verbal instructions.
  • Uses various types of welding equipment and a variety of common hand and power tools. 
  • Performs standardized work welding tanks and heat exchanger shells using the submerged arc welding (SAW) process, with backing, in the flat position.
  • Performs routine standardized work, welding sub-assemblies and other components using the FCAW/GMAW welding process, with backing, in the flat and horizontal position.
  • Reads and interprets simple drawings and performs simple layouts.
  • With assistance and supervision, may perform more complicated welding using various equipment.
  • Reads appropriate Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) and is capable of interpreting welding variables and assures that all parameters within the WPS are adhered to.
  • Monitors quality of work, makes corrective adjustments and reports equipment malfunctions, defective materials or other unusual conditions to supervisor.
  • Maintains necessary records, completes transactions within the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system and accesses company intranet as needed for work instructions.
  • Maintains work area in neat, clean, and orderly condition and observes all safety regulations and practices.
  • Picks appropriate setting for section to be rolled according to specifications and activates machinery.
  • Moves console controls to advance steel from approach table to mill entry table and through complete rolling cycle automatically, to reduce steel products to specified shape, size, and gauge.
  • Observes, from control pulpit, rolling irregularities in ingot, such as pipe, split end, or heat loss, and notifies other worker through intercom system to shear defective parts.
  • Observes rolling operations, dial and colored light indicators, and other gauges, and manipulates control levers and switches to adjust roll draft, alignment, or mill speed to correct rolling and tolerance deviations or drift.
  • Stops automated mill and changes to manual control operations on breakdown or failure of electronic or mill equipment.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be able to pass American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Section IX welding tests with the following variables:   
    • FCAW/GMAW and SAW processes
    • Steel-steel, steel-stainless, stainless-stainless material
    • Flat, horizontal and vertical positions
    • With or without backing
  • 1 year experience with manual or machine welding 
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and effectively apply to assigned work
  • Ability to navigate multiple windows in company ERP system to access production and resource data
  • Ability to perform repetitive work requiring constant alertness or activity, including standing and lifting
  • Ability to manage time effectively to meet strict time deadlines and production volumes
  • Requires judgment to comply with instructions, prescribed routines, methods and practices
  • Minimal/no travel required

Work Environment

This position works primarily in a production floor environment where large equipment and noise are prevalent.  Safety gear is required in these areas.

This position reports into the site every day.

This position has no direct reports.
