Newmont Tanami is on Aboriginal freehold land 540km northwest of Alice Springs. It is a long-life, low-cost, world-class asset in a core Newmont region. The Tanami Expansion 2 project, aims to extend the mine life beyond 2040, investing in a hoisting shaft which will increase the production of the underground mine from 2.6 Mtpa to 3.2 Mtpa.  Both the successful exploration within the underground operation and implementation of the first Tanami Expansion has laid the foundation to further develop the operation to remain a major contributor to the Newmont portfolio. A fully equipped camp is located 40km from the site offering leisure facilities for those flying in from Perth, Brisbane, Alice Springs or Darwin.

Your impact  

 

As a Backfill Technician at Newmont Tanami, you will play a vital role in supporting safe, efficient and high‑quality underground mining through the delivery of reliable paste backfill services.

 

Working closely with the Backfill/Geotechnical Superintendent, Technical Services, Paste Plant personnel and underground operations, you will ensure backfill activities are executed to standard, monitored effectively and continuously improved to support the mine’s production schedule.

 

This role provides strong exposure across underground operations, technical services and paste plant activities, offering the opportunity to influence stope performance, contribute to backfill planning and support the success of a world‑class underground mining operation.

 

As part of our team you will

 

  • Monitor underground voids, paste reticulation and fill performance in line with the backfill schedule
  •  Prepare and issue work instructions for operational backfill activities
  •  Liaise daily with the paste plant to coordinate activities and resolve issues
  •  Conduct underground inspections, including:
  • Assessing and selecting backfill wall locations
  • Ensuring reticulation lines, walls and bunds are installed to standard
  • Verifying compliance with fill standards, exclusion zones and operating procedures
  • Monitoring fill levels and investigating variances
  • Complete rock tip inspections and ensure safe, compliant fill practices
  • Forecast, record and report daily, weekly and monthly fill performance
  • Install and analyse in‑situ stope instrumentation
  • Assist with contractor management for paste‑related work
  • Support paste QAQC activities, including:
  • Ensuring sampling and testing is completed at required intervals
  • Reviewing QAQC results and escalating non‑conformances
  • Mentoring paste plant operators in QAQC processes
  • Checking wall construction quality and shotcrete strength results
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of backfill standards and procedures
  • Provide technical advice to Technical Services, Geology and Operations teams
  • Maintain accurate records, reports and documentation

 

 

 

Prerequisites for your success in the role

  • Experience working in underground mining environments (minimum 2 years preferred)
  • Hands on capability and confidence using basic hand and power tools
  • Previous backfill experience (operational or technical) highly regarded
  • Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office; Deswik experience desirable
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and manage competing priorities
  • Commitment to safety, environmental stewardship and continuous improvement

  • FIFO 8 days on site | 6 days off
  • 12‑hour shifts
  • Work in a remote desert environment at our Tanami Operations
