Systems Analytics Engineer, Connectivity & Telematics
About Us Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies is a joint venture between two industry leaders with a clear vision for automotive’s next chapter. From operating systems to zonal controllers to cloud and connectivity solutions, we’re addressing the challenges of electric vehicles through technology that will set the standards for software-defined vehicles around the world. The road to the future is uncharted. By combining our expertise across connectivity, AI, security and more, we’ll map a new way forward. Working together, we’ll create a future that’s more connected, more intelligent, more sustainable for everyone. Role Summary About the Team The Connectivity & Telematics team is the central nervous system between Rivian vehicles and the cloud – responsible for real-time vehicle-to-cloud communication, remote command execution, telemetry pipelines, and system-level diagnostics across a fleet of 100,000+ vehicles. We sit at a rare intersection: close enough to the hardware to debug kernel behavior, and close enough to the cloud to trace a failure end-to-end. Role This role is fundamentally about investigation. You'll own some of the most complex, cross-cutting problems on the platform – the kind that don't live cleanly in one layer or one discipline's mental model. A single investigation might span embedded Linux behavior, networking internals, firmware interfaces, and cloud-connected services before the full picture comes together. You bring system knowledge, hands-on experimentation, and data to close the loop – forming hypotheses, designing targeted tests, and validating findings until something definitive emerges. Occasionally you'll take that work directly to the vehicle. Over time, we'll also develop your skills in large-scale analytics, giving you the tools to operate at fleet scale, not just single-device scale. Responsibilities Debug complex cross-stack issues spanning embedded Linux, networking, and cloud-connected services on production vehicles Investigate firmware-adjacent performance regressions using a mix of system knowledge, on-board logging, and controlled experimentation Build and maintain observability tooling to surface fleet-level health patterns from vehicle telemetry Conduct data-driven root cause analysis - forming hypotheses, designing experiments, and validating findings with rigor Occasionally perform on-vehicle testing and diagnostic work to reproduce or validate in-situ behavior Collaborate with firmware, platform, and cloud teams to trace issues that cross system boundaries Communicate findings clearly in written investigation summaries accessible to both technical and non-technical stakeholders Qualifications Required Skills Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or similar. 3–6 years of experience in embedded engineering Strong foundation in embedded Linux - you understand the kernel, drivers, networking stack, and how userspace interacts with hardware Systems-level thinking: you naturally decompose complex behavior into its moving parts, reason about subsystem interactions, and understand failure modes holistically A relentless debugging instinct - you don't stop at "it's probably firmware" or "it's probably the cloud"; you follow the problem wherever it leads Comfort using data as a diagnostic tool: querying logs, analyzing distributions, and using metrics to confirm or disprove a theory Methodical experimentation - you test ideas, measure outcomes, and iterate until the picture is clear Strong written communication - you write clearly for technical and non-technical audiences alike Preferred Skills Experience with vehicle networking (CAN, Automotive Ethernet, LTE/cellular modem management) Familiarity with analytics tooling - PySpark, Databricks, SQL, Python/pandas Exposure to remote diagnostics, OTA update systems, or fleet management platforms Prior work in automotive, robotics, or connected hardware products Pay Disclosure Salary Range for Palo Alto applicants: $146,900 - $183,600 USD. — The posted salary represents the lowest and highest ranges RV Tech reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for the position.
