Do you want a working day that can take you from Broome’s Cable Beach to the vibrant Goldfields, with stops through Mid West fishing and farming country, the forests of the South West, the Pindan of the Kimberley and the shores of Albany?

We are seeking an experienced and highly organised casual Sub-Editor to support our Editorial team on a flexible, as needed basis. This role plays a key part in shaping and overseeing content across both online and print platforms for The West AustralianThe Sunday Times and our 19 regional newspapers throughout Western Australia. 

Offered for up to three days a week (with a preference for weekend availability), this is an ideal opportunity for an experienced sub‑editor who wants to stay closely connected to the newsroom while maintaining flexibility around other professional or personal commitments.

About the role:

Our team of sub-editors work on a wide variety of stories and topics throughout the day, including business, travel, sport and, motoring as well as the news that makes every corner of our State tick. You will be responsible for: 

  • Editing news, sports, and feature articles to perfection. 

  • Crafting attention-grabbing headlines, sub-headings, and captions. 

  • Spotting and correcting factual and legal errors.  

  • Meeting tight deadlines and helping our team stay on track.  

  • Collaborating with reporters to fine-tune their copy and make every story shine. 

About you:

You will be a confident, adaptable sub-editor with: 

  • A strong news sense and sound editorial judgement. 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 

  • A meticulous eye for detail and accuracy. 

  • The ability to guide, refine and elevate copy across a wide range of subjects. 

  • Confidence working to deadlines in a fast-paced newsroom environment. 

  • Willingness to learn page layout would be advantageous. 

You will have a proven track record in journalism and be comfortable working across diverse content from crime, politics and court reporting to sport, features and lighter, offbeat stories.  

The successful applicant will be versatile and diligent with a strong news sense, a great command of English, an eagle eye for detail and the ability to write punchy, accurate headlines.
