Key responsibilities
In this role, you contribute to ABB’s success through technology, software, product, and system development. You identify and implement innovative solutions to complex challenges while bringing in your own ideas. Working both independently and within an R&D team, you actively shape the development of future-oriented solutions.
You will be mainly accountable for:
Design and development of embedded firmware for safety-critical industrial devices, covering hardware abstraction, drivers, application logic, and fieldbus integration (bare-metal and RTOS).
Implementation of monitoring, metering, and protection algorithms for three-phase systems, including motor control, overload protection, and signal analysis.
Ensuring high software quality with regard to scalability, maintainability, and testability, while contributing to agile engineering practices.
Collaboration in cross-functional teams, sharing technical knowledge, and supporting colleagues in applying processes and tools.
Ownership of firmware development projects, either as a senior contributor or project lead.
Driving innovation by developing, validating, and proposing new technical solutions and R&D activities.
Qualifications for the role
Degree in Applied Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a comparable field, along with at least 5 years of professional experience in a relevant environment.
Strong proficiency in C/C++ and solid computer science fundamentals.
Experience in embedded development (ARM, bare-metal, bootloader, firmware) and confident handling of development tools and processes (version control, build systems, testing, debugging).
Ability to independently analyze technical problems and derive requirements from datasheets, standards, and specifications.
Knowledge of functional safety (e.g. IEC 61508, ISO 13849) as well as basics in protection algorithms and signal processing are a plus.
Experience with industrial communication protocols (e.g. PROFINET, PROFIBUS, Modbus, EtherNet/IP) is an advantage.
Business-fluent English (written and spoken) and fluent German.
