Role Overview

The Technology Risk and Control function at Northern Trust enables Global Information Technology to operate within a strong First Line of Defense, supports a control-aware culture, and ensures delivery of secure, compliant, and resilient technology capabilities. The function protects client interests, supports regulatory compliance, and strengthens enterprise-wide technology risk management practices.

The Senior Lead, Technology Risk and Control role is responsible for leading day-to-day execution and delivery of the Technology Issue Management Program, supporting the Issue Program Lead in driving program maturity, operational excellence, and stakeholder adoption. This role acts as a key execution lead within the Issue Management Program Operations team, ensuring consistent application of standards, high-quality issue lifecycle management, and effective governance outcomes.

The Senior Lead partners closely with Technology, Risk, Compliance, and Audit stakeholders to support issue identification, validation, remediation tracking, and reporting, and plays a critical role in driving discipline, transparency, and accountability across the Technology Issue Management lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead and coordinate day-to-day execution of Technology Issue Management Program activities, ensuring adherence to enterprise and technology-specific issue management standards.

Support the Issue Management Program Owner in operationalizing the strategic direction of the Technology Issue Management Program.

Drive consistent application of issue lifecycle requirements, including issue intake, validation, action plan review, remediation tracking, and closure readiness.

Lead the simplification, standardization, and automation of Technology Issue Management metrics and reporting, leveraging Power BI to produce accurate, timely, and actionable insights; design and implement analytics and AI-enabled use cases focused on issue quality assessment, trend analysis, and identification of data quality gaps.

Prepare and deliver executive-level dashboards, governance materials, and management reporting to support forums, committees, and senior stakeholder reviews.

Facilitate Technology issue review forums and working sessions, ensuring clear documentation of decisions, risks, and follow-up actions.

Partner with Technology Control Officers, Issue Owners, and Delivery Leads to drive accountability for issue remediation timelines, quality, and evidentiary standards.

Support governance and challenge processes for risk acceptance, extensions, and material issue escalation, ensuring appropriate documentation and transparency.

Collaborate closely with Second Line of Defense partners to align on issue management expectations, quality standards, and aggregated risk insights.

Identify trends, control gaps, and recurring themes across the Technology issue inventory and recommend targeted remediation or process improvements.

Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives aimed at increasing program maturity, operational efficiency, and risk visibility.

Support development and delivery of training, awareness, and enablement materials for Technology, Risk, and Control stakeholders.

Qualifications:

Strong experience in technology risk management, control assurance, issue management, or audit execution, with demonstrated ability to manage complex operational processes.

Sound understanding of control design, issue validation, remediation governance, and risk management frameworks within large, regulated organizations.

Proven ability to analyze data, identify trends, and translate insights into clear, actionable recommendations.

Experience developing management reporting and dashboards, with hands-on exposure to Power BI or similar analytics tools.

Ability to work effectively across Technology, Risk, Compliance, and Audit teams, influencing outcomes without direct authority.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present risk and control information clearly to senior stakeholders.

Experience and Education

Bachelor’s degree in technology, information systems, cybersecurity, risk management, or a related discipline.

Typically, 10+ years of experience in technology risk, controls, audit, or related functions with increasing responsibility.

Prior experience within the financial services industry is strongly preferred.

Relevant certifications (e.g., CISA, CISSP, CRISC, or equivalent) are an advantage.
