Senior GEN Consultant

SUMMARY:

As a Senior Gen Conversion Consultant, you’ll lead the modernisation of legacy CA Gen (Cool:Gen) estates, specialising in structured conversion and regeneration programmes. Most of the work focuses on helping organisations move away from Gen, primarily converting to COBOL (mainframe or cloud-hosted via Micro Focus), as well as Java, .NET, or TypeScript/Angular. You will bring deep expertise in Gen models and environments, working hands-on across the full migration lifecycle using specialised tooling (MigrationWorks), ensuring high-quality, low-risk transformation of mission-critical systems. This is a highly technical, model-driven legacy modernisation role.

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING:

You will join our engineering team and be a valued member working closely in a collaborative, autonomous, cross-functional team. You will help with the following:

Lead end-to-end Gen conversion and regeneration programmes
Analyse and deeply understand existing Gen Models, Action Diagrams, Procedures and Data Structures
Work primarily with Mainframe Gen estates (including 3270 block-mode green screens)
Support Distributed (non-mainframe) Gen environments where required
Execute structured conversions using MigrationWorks across its five stages:

- Discover – Assess and understand the Gen model

- Prepare – Optimise and refactor models to improve conversion accuracy

- Extract – Export models from Gen into XML format

- Convert – Transform XML into the target environment (COBOL, Java, .NET, TypeScript/Angular)

- Adapt – Perform post-production refinements, standards alignment and optimisation

Collaborate closely with client engineering teams to ensure smooth hand-offs and minimal disruption
Troubleshoot complex Gen issues within legacy environments
Provide technical leadership and best practice guidance during modernisation initiatives
Support proposals and technical discussions where deep Gen expertise is required

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or any related technical field.
Extensive hands-on experience with CA Gen / Cool:Gen
Deep understanding of: Gen Models, Action Diagrams, Business Components, Data Models, 3270 block mode implementations
Experience working in Mainframe environments
Proven involvement in Gen migration, regeneration, or conversion projects
Strong troubleshooting capability within complex Gen estates
Experience with one or more target languages: COBOL (especially mainframe or Micro Focus COBOL in cloud environments), Java, .NET, TypeScript / Angular
Experience working with XML transformations
Exposure to distributed Gen estates
Experience modernising legacy systems to cloud or hybrid environments
Familiarity with structured migration tooling (MigrationWorks is a significant plus)
Strong English communication skills, written and verbal

AWESOME BUT NOT REQUIRED:

Experience across multiple destination languages (source + target architecture understanding)
Knowledge of Micro Focus COBOL deployments in cloud environments
Exposure to enterprise legacy transformation programmes
Experience mentoring junior consultants or client teams
Involvement in RFPs or technical pre-sales activities
