Robotics Systems Engineer

Arlington, VA Remote March 11, 2026 Full Time

Job Description:

We are seeking a Robotics Engineer to build and maintain the software infrastructure that powers our Smartmast platform—a distributed edge system designed for intelligent sensing and autonomous maritime operations. In this role, you will develop the software that orchestrates hardware components including cameras, GPS, IMUs, SDRs, radar, and subsea acoustic sensors. You may be responsible for robotic control of cameras, automated tracking/stabilization, reliable data collection, efficient inter-process communication, artifact delivery to the cloud, and bandwidth-aware optimizations for long-range deployments. This role spans from hardware-near ROS development to cloud messaging, and is ideal for an engineer with experience shipping real-time systems that must remain robust in harsh and remote environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and maintain system software responsible for sensor control, data acquisition, and stream management across a diverse range of hardware platforms.

  • Enhance inter-process messaging frameworks utilizing ROS2.

  • Optimize network usage and implement compression strategies to ensure reliable artifact transmission over limited bandwidth uplinks (e.g., satellite).

  • Integrate and synchronize data inputs from GPS, IMU, radar, lidar, acoustic, and additional sensor technologies to generate structured outputs for downstream perception and tracking functions.

  • Develop and maintain software modules for the management and configuration of peripherals, including SDRs, cameras, and other edge devices.

  • Collaborate with AI and backend teams to define data formats, delivery schedules, and observability frameworks for remote model and sensor performance monitoring.

  • Create tools for local testing, diagnostics, and system-level monitoring of Smartmast units deployed in the field.

  • Contribute to performance optimization, process reliability, and logging systems to support unattended, long-duration operations.

Qualifications (Preferred):

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Robotics, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or a related discipline.

  • A minimum of four years' experience in developing production-quality robotics, embedded, or distributed systems software.

  • Advanced proficiency in Python and C++, with substantial experience in Linux-based environments.

  • Practical experience with ROS2 or similar middleware communication frameworks.

  • Familiarity with the integration and data management of sensors such as GPS, IMU, radar, lidar, or acoustic systems.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of networking, message serialization, compression, and strategies for communication over constrained bandwidth.

  • Experience working on systems deployed in field environments with intermittent connectivity or limited computational resources.

  • Strong skills in debugging, testing, and documentation for distributed software systems.

  • Preferred: Experience in SDR programming, marine or aerospace deployments, or the development of high-reliability IoT systems.

Work Environment:

  • Hybrid work arrangement: 3 days onsite / 2 days remote.

  • Flexible working hours are provided, with occasional deadlines that may require increased availability.

  • Opportunity to contribute to innovative projects with global impact.

Benefits:

  • Competitive salary

  • Flexible work hours and the option for remote work.

  • Opportunities for professional development and continued education.
