Recycle electric vehicle batteries

Recycle electric vehicle batteries

With French and international partners, Orano has developed an innovative, low-carbon hydrometallurgical process to recover and purify valuable materials contained in end-of-life electric vehicle battery modules (cobalt, manganese, nickel, lithium, graphite) or scrap from gigafactories (gigascrap) for reuse in new components. An industrial platform will be up and running from the end of 2026 in Dunkirk (Hauts-de-France) with the construction of two plants for the manufacturing of Cathode Active Materials (CAMs) and their precursors (PCAMs), and a recycling plant.

This project meets the objective set by the European Union to gradually introduce recycled materials to new electric vehicle batteries.

  • 100 million electric vehicles on the road worldwide by 2030 versus 10 million today
Recycling electric vehicle batteries will help to make the EU’s ambitions for circular economy and net zero become a reality.
