Python Engineer - AI & LLMs

London (Euston Square) April 8, 2026

About Modo Energy

The energy transition is the biggest infrastructure buildout in human history. Modo Energy is the data platform at the centre of it.

We build the benchmarking, forecasting, and valuation tools that the world's most serious energy investors, developers, and operators depend on to make decisions. If a battery gets financed, built, or traded anywhere in the world, there's a good chance Modo data was in the room.

Founded in 2019, we're 75+ people across London, New York, Sydney, and Madrid; $30M Series B, AI-native, and moving fast.

This is a rare chance to join a category-defining company at the moment it's scaling globally.

Python Engineer

At Modo Energy we’re building an AI platform for energy markets — combining LLM agents, retrieval pipelines, and real-time market data to create an AI analyst that can reason about complex energy systems.

We’re an AI-native engineering team — everyone uses AI coding tools and many of the systems we build are designed to be consumed by AI agents as much as humans.

The role

We are hiring a Python Engineer join our Terminal team responsible for the backend platform & infrastructure. The Modo Terminal is our core product - a data and research platform that energy market professionals use every day to make better decisions. It serves real-time and historical data, proprietary research, and analytical tools across Global energy storage markets.

You'll own the backend systems that make the Terminal reliable, fast, and easy to build on: APIs, databases, deployment infrastructure, and developer tooling. As the team grows and the product becomes more ambitious - the platform needs to grow with it.

You'll work in a small cross-functional team with a lot of autonomy. We value engineers who take ownership of problems end-to-end, care about the quality of what ships, and aren't afraid to challenge how things are done.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain the backend services and APIs that power the Modo Terminal, running on Django and Python.
  • Design and improve data pipelines that ingest, transform, and serve energy market data - ensuring reliability, correctness, and performance at scale.
  • Own AWS infrastructure and deployment end-to-end. We use Terraform, and you'll be involved in the full lifecycle from local development to production.
  • Build monitoring, observability, and alerting infrastructure - so we catch problems before our customers do.
  • Design internal tools (CLIs, APIs, developer utilities) that make the team faster and reduce friction in day-to-day workflows.
  • Work directly with domain experts (energy analysts, data scientists) to make sure the platform serves data that is accurate, timely, and useful.
  • Contribute to the infrastructure that supports our LLM-powered AI Analyst - retrieval pipelines, tool design, and systems that let models work with energy market data effectively.

About you

  • 5+ years of Python experience. Strong backend fundamentals - you write clean, well-structured code and you're comfortable owning services end-to-end, from API design through to deployment and monitoring.
  • Real experience with AWS and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform). You've deployed and maintained production services, not just experimented in a sandbox.
  • Proficiency with Django, FastAPI or similar async Python frameworks.
  • Hands-on experience with data pipelines, relational databases (PostgreSQL), and building systems that serve data reliably at scale.
  • Familiarity with LLM-powered applications is a strong plus - whether that's RAG pipelines, tool-calling architectures, or agentic systems. You don't need to be an ML engineer, but you should be curious and ready to build the infrastructure these systems run on.
  • Expert-level use of AI coding tools (Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar). We write a lot of code with these tools and expect you to be fluent - knowing when to trust them, when to intervene, and how to get the most out of them.
  • Good taste and judgment. You'll make constant decisions about system design, data modelling, and what's good enough to ship versus what needs more work. We want someone who cares about the end result, not just getting it to compile.
  • Comfort working in a small, fast-moving team where you'll be expected to figure things out, make tradeoffs, and ship.
  • You have full lifecycle experience, owning projects end-to-end from design and development, through testing into deployment in a live production environment.

Nice to have

  • Experience with energy markets.
