Principal BMS Industrial System Architect (m/f/d)

Munich April 15, 2026 Full Time Workday

As part of NXP’s electrification and energy transition strategy, the Battery Management Systems (BMS) business is expanding beyond automotive into industrial Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), grid-edge, and energy infrastructure applications. We are looking for an experienced Principal BMS Industrial System Architect to define and drive next-generation BMS system architecture and solutions for industrial and stationary energy storage markets.

Position Overview

As a Principal BMS Industrial System Architect, you will be a technical authority responsible for defining, assessing, and driving end‑to‑end BMS system architectures for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and related industrial applications. You will operate at system level across hardware, firmware, algorithms, safety, communications, and edge/cloud interfaces, translating application and customer needs into scalable and robust BMS solutions.

In this role, you will work at the intersection of system architecture, customer engagement, system validation strategy, and next generation products planning. You will collaborate closely with Product Definition, Systems, Applications, Validation, Safety, and Marketing teams, while also engaging directly with key industrial customers, integrators, and ecosystem partners. As a principal‑level engineer, you will provide technical leadership, mentor engineers, and influence the long-term BMS roadmap.

Key Responsibilities

System Architecture & Technical Leadership

  • Define and own BMS system architectures for industrial Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), including module, rack, and system-level solutions
  • Drive architectural trade-offs across hardware, software, algorithms, communications, safety, and cost
  • Define scalable and reusable reference architectures for different industrial energy storage use cases (utility-scale BESS, C&I, microgrids, backup power, data centers)

Industrial Applications & Customer Engagement

  • Act as a technical authority and system architect interface toward industrial BMS customers and system integrators
  • Support customer engagements from early concept definition through system evaluation and architectural alignment
  • Translate application-level requirements (performance, lifetime, safety, certification, cost) into complete system solutions and IC product definition

Reliability & Compliance

  • Drive system-level approaches for diagnostics, redundancy, and fault tolerance
  • Ensure alignment with industrial and energy-storage-related standards and regulations
  • Support system validation strategies addressing performance, safety, robustness, ageing, and field reliability

System Validation & Reference Platforms

  • Guide system validation concepts for BESS BMS solutions together with system validation and applications teams
  • Define scope and content of reference designs, demonstrators, and proof-of-concept platforms
  • Provide architectural input to validation strategies covering electrical, environmental, and system interaction aspects

Strategy, Roadmap & Cross‑Functional Influence

  • Influence product and system roadmaps by defining system-level requirements and architectural needs
  • Identify technology gaps and propose features for future BMS ICs, platforms, and solutions
  • Mentor and technically guide system and application engineers across global teams

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • BSEE required; MSEE or PhD preferred
  • 10+ years of experience in BMS, energy storage systems, power electronics, or industrial system architecture
  • Proven experience with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) architecture and applications

Core Technical Expertise

  • Deep system-level understanding of BMS architecture for stationary and industrial energy storage
  • Strong knowledge of battery technologies, system sizing, performance trade-offs, and lifetime optimization
  • Solid understanding of BMS algorithms (SOC, SOH, protection, balancing, diagnostics) at system-architecture level
  • Experience with embedded systems, mixed-signal architectures, and industrial communication interfaces
  • Experience with safety concepts, redundancy strategies, and system reliability for industrial applications

Preferred Knowledge & Experience

  • Knowledge of Data Center architecture and power infrastructure, including backup power, energy storage integration, and high-availability systems
  • Exposure to Robotics systems and applications, including electrification, distributed power systems, or safety-related system design
  • Familiarity with edge connectivity, monitoring, or energy management systems in industrial environments

Professional Skills

  • Ability to work independently and drive technical direction at principal level
  • Strong analytical and system-thinking mindset with excellent problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of engaging with customers, architects, and senior technical stakeholders
  • Experience working in international and interdisciplinary teams

Please note: The successful candidate may/will be responsible for security related tasks. The assignment may/will be in scope of security certifications, therefore a conscious and reliable way of working is necessary
