Position Summary:
This position is responsible for the daily maintenance and integrity of all Channel Maintenance vessels. Insure a state of readiness adequate for all applicable Federal, State and Local Regulations. The Captain is responsible for continual repairs to Port Houston wharves, docks, piers, fender and mooring systems, etc. Furthermore, the Captain while underway or assigned individual projects will act as a working lead man responsible for the safety and well-being of his/her subordinates as well as Port Houston property.
Responsibilities/Duties:
- Responsible for the overall safety and operation of his/her vessel and the assigned crew, including their safety, well-being, training and overall efficiency
- Remove debris from the Houston Ship Channel, connecting waters, Port Houston beaches and beneath wharves
- Accomplish repairs to Port Houston wharves, dock, piers, moorings, etc., independently or in conjunction with Maintenance Department personnel
- Includes the driving of pilings
- Provide a floating platform for engineers, contractors, maintenance personnel, etc., to inspect and repair wharves
- Train the crew in seamanship, safety and maintenance
- Requisition and maintain adequate supplies, while insuring economical and proper use thereof and initiating safeguards against pilferage and loss
- Work required scheduled overtime hours and be available for unscheduled overtime when operating requirements or other business needs of Port Houston cannot be fulfilled during regular working hours
- Work a temporary, alternative schedule or shift as requested by supervisor

- Perform other duties as required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrate ability to improvise and adjust to new situations
- Knowledge of marine diesel, hydraulics and shipboard equipment
- Knowledge of Port Houston safety rules and procedures
- Knowledge of safety precautions concerning occupational hazards
- Ability to work with others
- Ability to pay attention to detail
- Verbal and written communication skills
- Must have seamanship, boat handling, heavy wood structure repair, welding cutting, burning and rigging skills and techniques as would be acquired through several years’ experience
- A current, valid Texas driver's license is required
Education/Work Experience:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required
- Six (6) months of marine experience with Port Houston required
- USCG Masters License & endorsement to operate an Uninspected Towing Vessel (UTV) of no less than 23 gross tons with completed Radar Certifications or a 100-ton Operator Uninspected Passenger Vessel (OUPV) Near Coastal License required
- Experience and ability to safely navigate all PHA marine vessels in all near coastal and inland boundaries of USCG district 8
- Five (5) years’ experience in wharf repairs preferred
