NEA seeks a Shared Capacity CFO. This position reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer and works in the capacity of CFO for several state affiliates. This position also works closely with NEA’s Manager of Affiliate Support and Director of Business and Financial Services to ensure effective oversight of state affiliate fiscal operations. The Shared Capacity CFO provides leadership and supervision of assigned state affiliate staff and is a direct contributor to the daily workflow and operations of the Office of the Chief Financial Officer and the state affiliates.
Responsibilities:
• Prepare audit workpapers and work with public accountants to complete the annual audit for state associations and related entities.
• Prepare IRS, state, local, and other tax filings for state associations.
• Assess the operations and staffing requirements of the state affiliates’ finance and accounting departments, and membership departments and provide recommendations to the NEA and its state affiliate executive directors.
• Create and/or update policies and procedures manuals for accounting and membership for the state affiliates.
• Implement an internal control structure for the state affiliates’ accounting and finance, and membership departments.
• Assist with the creation of strategic plans and strategic budgets and provide feedback to the state executive directors and board of directors.
• Assist with the reconciliation of general ledger accounts, bank and investment accounts, and state association credit cards.
• Assist with the processing of payroll and reconciliation of payroll and other related accounts.
• Assist with the accounting and reporting for NEA grants and subsidies and related expenses.
• Assist with the accounting and reporting of membership dues.
• Assist with employee benefit plan administration and accounting.
• Assist with the reconciliation of member rosters and the annual membership rollforward process.
• Prepare monthly financial statements and related schedules for the board package for the state affiliates, and any related entities.
• Create standardized accounting journal entry templates and month-end and year-end close checklists.
• Train current state affiliate finance and accounting staff, and executive directors to increase financial skills and acumen.
• Attend state affiliate board of directors’ meetings and other committee meetings both in-person and virtually.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, with a concentration in accounting, finance, or business-related principle.
• Certified Public Accountant or equivalent.
• Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible management experience in finance and accounting.
• A strong commitment to the mission of NEA and its state affiliates.
• Demonstrated knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, including not-for-profit accounting, and internal controls for the safeguarding of assets.
• Demonstrated experience in organizing, conceptualizing, and prioritizing objectives and managing the workflow of state affiliates’ finance and accounting offices, both in-person and virtually.
• Demonstrated excellent supervisory, administrative, communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
• Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with NEA and state affiliate leaders and staff.
• Skill in working effectively in a team environment.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions; and effectively present information to state affiliate senior management and its board of directors and committees.
• Ability to work under pressure and within short time constraints in a complex system and business environment.
• Experience working in a union environment desired.
• Knowledge of PeopleSoft desired.
• Must have the ability to travel out of state periodically.
