Position Overview
The Medical Assistant – Trainer provides patient care in the clinic under the direction of a provider while serving as a clinical resource for Medical Assistants. Working under limited supervision, this role adapts procedures, processes, and techniques to meet the more complex requirements of the position. The Medical Assistant – Trainer provides orientation and training support to new hires, answers clinical questions, and serves as a resource for clinical team members while modeling behavior consistent with the Mission, Vision, and Values of West Cancer Center.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides orientation and training to new Medical Assistant hires on clinical workflows and responsibilities within the physician office.
  • Provides training support for competency requirements of new hires and assists as needed with competency checkoffs for Medical Assistants.
  • Serves as a clinical resource by answering questions and supporting Medical Assistants in daily practice.
  • Proactively fulfills patient care responsibilities as requested by physicians or other clinicians.
  • Performs clinical medical assisting responsibilities as required.
  • Fulfills environmental responsibilities, including setting up exam rooms, instruments, and equipment.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Required:
    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Minimum of three (3) years of West Cancer Center experience that includes training employees OR five (5) years of experience working in a medical facility as a Medical Assistant, including one (1) year of experience as a trainer.
    • Current certification as a Medical Assistant through one of the following:
      • American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
      • National Health Career Association (NHA)
      • National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
      • National Association of Health Professionals (NAHP)
      • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), American Registry of Medical Assistants
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association.
  • Preferred:
    • Graduate of an accredited medical assisting program.

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work tactfully and professionally with patients, families, and physicians.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Medical Assistant competencies and skills checklists.
  • Ability to train new hires in patient interaction standards, including greeting patients appropriately and using patient names.
  • Ability to support Medical Assistants in working independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency in EMR navigation and documentation, including reviewing computer reports using evidence-based guidelines.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in motivational interviewing and teach-back techniques.
  • Ability to act quickly and appropriately in emergency situations.
