Job Summary
The Marine Cargo Surveyor is responsible for independently executing pre-dispatch inspections, transit condition surveys, loading/unloading supervision, and loss prevention assessments of various cargo types including ODC/Heavy Lift, flat rack/Break-bulk, bulk dry and liquid cargo. This role involves direct client interaction, conducting expert surveys in the field (any time of day / night dispatch hours), preparing accurate technical reports, and further providing supporting ancillary insurance risk management services for the departments products / services and deliverables.
Candidate shall be a resident of Chennai or Near Chennai region.
Key Responsibilities
1. Pre-Shipment Inspections & ODC Surveys
- Inspect and verify securing, stacking, and lashing of Over-Dimensional Cargo and heavy machinery before dispatch.
- Assess the condition of cargo attachments, slings, dunnage, and lifting appliances.
- Validate compliance with shipping & safety standards for ODC on flat racks, RORO, trailers, and lift-on/lift-off operations.
2. Cargo Securing, Lifting & Handling Equipment
- Inspect cranes, lifting gear, shackles, wires, spreader beams and related lifting accessories.
- Ensure compliance with statutory requirements and correct certification of all lifting appliances.
- Identify and document potential hazards and recommend corrective actions.
3. Transit Condition & In-Transit Surveys
- Conduct pre- and post-voyage condition surveys for break-bulk, general cargo, and project cargo.
- Assess damage, moisture, contamination, and structural issues.
- Communicate findings with clients, carriers, and insurers.
4. Loading & Unloading Supervision
- Supervise loading/unloading at ports, terminals, warehouses, and yards.
- Ensure correct procedures are followed to prevent cargo damage.
- Report deviations and recommend corrective procedures.
5. Bulk & Liquid Cargo Surveys
- Perform draft surveys for liquid & dry bulk consignments to determine quantity/weight.
- Conduct ullage and soundings in shore tank farms, barges, and tankers.
- Record tank conditions, temperatures, and compliance with standards.
6. Reporting & Documentation
- Prepare clear, structured, and professional survey reports within prescribed timelines.
- Maintain all relevant documentation (photos, sketches, measurement sheets, checklists).
- Provide recommendations and risk mitigation advice based on findings.
7. Client Interface & Communication
- Act as the point of contact for shippers, carriers, agents, and insurers.
- Clearly explain technical issues to non-technical stakeholders.
- Build strong professional relationships through clear communication and responsiveness.
8. Travel & Field Work
- Be available for inspection assignments across the Southern Region.
- Travel may require night surveys or odd hours; ensure compliance with safety & rest protocols.
- Maintain responsiveness for urgent survey calls and client needs.
9. Ancillary Risk Services
- Provide value-added services including risk assessments, loss prevention advice, and claims support
- Support development of risk management strategies for clients and insurers.
10. Compliance & Quality
- Uphold company quality standards and industry best practices at all times.
- Ensure surveys comply with statutory and insurance requirements.
11. Engagement with Clients, channel partners
- Promote risk management services to various stake holders
Qualifications & Experience Required
Educational
- B.Tech / Engineering Degree (Mechanical, Marine, Civil, or relevant discipline).
- IRDA License (Insurance Regulatory & Development Authority) / valid surveyor accreditation.
Work Experience
- 3 4+ years of hands-on surveying experience.
- Demonstrated experience in:
- ODC/Project cargo inspection
- Lashing, securing & lifting appliance inspections
- Bulk dry and liquid cargo surveys
- Draft and ullage surveys
Skills & Competencies
- Strong written and verbal communication.
- Excellent report writing and analytical skills.
- Comfortable working independently in field environments (ports, tank farms, terminals, yard sites).
- Good client-facing skills, professional and reliable.
- Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize field vs. office tasks.
