What you’ll do (responsibilities)

  • Lead legal strategy for generative AI products, including driving design reviews, advising on risk mitigation, and embedding legal input into product planning and delivery cycles.

  • Own and manage China-specific AI-related regulatory filings, such as algorithm disclosures, LLM registrations, and required documentation under emerging AI governance frameworks.

  • Build and maintain trusted relationships with regulators, representing Canva.cn in inquiries, consultations, and ongoing engagements.

  • Monitor and assess China’s evolving legal and enforcement landscape, and translate developments into clear, actionable guidance for internal teams.

  • Advise on AI-related provisions in commercial contracts, platform terms, and user-facing legal documents.

  • Develop and implement internal legal policies and training programs tailored to Canva’s China business, equipping teams with practical guidance to navigate legal and regulatory risks.

  • Shape growth and marketing strategies for Canva.cn, providing legal input on campaigns, partnerships, content, and public messaging with a regulatory and reputational lens.

  • Promote AI-native legal practices within Canva China by identifying opportunities to automate legal workflows, and enhance internal tooling.

  • Collaborate with global Legal team peers across product & privacy, IP, commercial, and public policy to ensure alignment, shared insight, and consistent implementation across the Canva Group.

What we're looking for

  • Legally qualified to practice law in the People’s Republic of China, with 7–10+ years of legal experience, including in-house experience in fast-paced, tech-driven environments.
  • Deep knowledge of China’s regulatory landscape, particularly in generative AI compliance and governance.

  • Proven ability to proactively manage regulator relationships and confidently represent the company in formal and informal engagements.

  • Collaborative, pragmatic, and business-oriented legal professional with a strong interest in supporting company growth.

  • Ability to bring clarity to complex issues and simplify compliance requirements without compromising standards.

  • Experience working closely with engineers, product managers, and marketing teams, with an AI-native mindset toward technology, risk assessment, and innovation enablement.

  • Strong risk awareness with balanced and practical judgment.

  • Comfortable collaborating across time zones and working in global teams.

  • Creative, curious, and highly self-motivated.
