Lead Sourcing Manager

Job Description

The Role:

As a Lead Sourcing Manager you will be responsible for leading a team to purchase all transportation and material management services for the Customer Care & Aftersales Logistics team.  You will be responsible for setting and executing current/future sourcing strategies and leading procurement of transportation services for material between GM suppliers and end-user customers across U.S, Canada, and Mexico.   The role requires the candidate to lead their team to develop commodity strategies and to actively coach and support team members with the sourcing process and supplier negotiations.  You will be responsible for developing a plan to achieve budget execution for your team.

The role requires highly proficient written and oral communication skills that will allow you to develop a team to meet shared goals and work effectively with cross functional partners (engineering, supply chain and operations).  You will also be required to develop, manage and communicate to leadership both the short- and long-term strategies for the team.  This role will require you to work collaboratively with your Senior Group Logistics Manager to lead a team of purchasing professionals.  Work is of a difficult nature involving a considerable amount of initiative, strategy, negotiations and a high level of independent judgment. In this role, you will work closely with an extended GM Team, service providers, 3PL’s and transportation carriers to ensure the achievement of cost, performance, and organization’s targets.

What You’ll Do:

  • Develop and execute a robust commodity strategy based on market and technology trends.
  • Create and manage Quality Bid list, Carrier Performance, Sourcing Pipeline, Business Over Time strategy, Compliance Desktop, Export Compliance, TPSR, Sustainability, Benchmarking data, etc.
  • Manage global Purchasing staff meetings and larger cross functional reviews with support and collaboration with key stakeholders
  • Develop and execute a business plan to meet financial budget performance goals
  • Support global counterparts to address operational issues and align the global strategy for future programs and supplier management
  • Keep abreast of trends that impact the team—be it market, technology or changes in the supply base
  • Improve supplier relationships through collaboration, mutual waste elimination and relationship building tools such as the Strategic Supplier Engagement program (SSE)
  • Participate in supplier KPI reviews and conduct carrier business reviews.
  • Collaborate with GM Legal staff to develop terms and conditions specific to transportation services (including negotiating price, duration, terms and conditions, etc.)
  • Utilize the GPSC sourcing process to manage sourcing packages (RFQ, Quote Analysis and Source Selection) and to establish a capable/competitive global supply base
  • Analyze and apply appropriate tools, i.e., benchmarking, global competitive sourcing, value chain analysis, supplier negotiations, engineering change cost containment, technical cost reduction, part/system reuse, etc.

Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • 5+ years relevant work experience in purchasing, supply chain, program/product management, logistics operations, etc.
  • Experience managing commercial issues with suppliers and assessing supplier performance
  • Expertise in MS Office tools:  Excel, PowerPoint, Word
  • Proficient in completing tasks autonomously, without coaching in the following competencies:
    • Data Judgement - Ability to objectively analyze data and draw meaningful conclusions
    • Informative Communication - Ability to communicate relevant information to the appropriate audience both effectively and timely
    • Relationship Management - Develops and maintains constructive, cooperative working relationships

    • Results Focus - Take charge without prompting, seize opportunities and deliver on time
    • Workload Management - Manage multiple tasks with quality and prioritize by critical needs

What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Purchasing, Supply Chain Management, Finance, Logistics, related field 
  • Experience in Artificial Intelligence (AI) modeling or related experience
  • Experience with automotive aftermarket part management, warehousing, transportation services, mode conversion analysis, contract terms & conditions negotiations, etc.
  • Automotive industry experience
  • Capable of drawing conclusions from complex data, market trends and the regulatory environment
  • Knowledge of contract law as it applies to the purchasing processes
  • Experience with strategy development and budget management
