Lead National Compliance Manager
About the role
As a Lead National Compliance Manager, you’ll be accountable for assuring statutory and regulatory compliance across multiple UK compliance regimes within a large, geographically dispersed retail maintenance engineering estate. Responsible for establishing and maintaining robust governance, assurance frameworks, and controls to ensure full compliance with legislation including the Building Safety Act, Fire Safety Order, Electricity at Work Regulations, gas safety, lifting operations, pressure systems, asbestos, and wider health and safety obligations.
You\'ll work closely with our senior leadership to national team of compliance and technical assurance specialists, taking ownership of compliance relationships with our statutory inspection partners and associated supplier base and consultancy contracts. Ensures resources are deployed effectively to deliver auditable, risk-based compliance outcomes and continuous improvement across the estate.
You will partner closely with Heads of Maintenance and operational leaders to define, own, and continuously improve statutory compliance standards, policies, and processes. Operating as a visible, credible leader who drives accountability, challenges non-compliance constructively, and embeds a strong compliance culture across the organisation.

You will be responsible for
- Make sure we meet all legal and safety rules for key maintenance areas.
- Spot any risks early and put the right systems in place to stay compliant.
- Always aim to meet – and where possible, beat – our safe and legal standards.
- Keep planned maintenance on track so we don’t miss any important deadlines.
- Check that any issues found in audits (like Store Safe and Legal or external checks) are fixed properly.
- Review completed repair work to make sure it’s done to the right standard.
- Stay up to date with changes in laws or rules and update our processes when needed.
- Help manage records to show we’re following the law in each category.
- Share updates and reports to show we’re on top of compliance across the business.
- Handle any issues by working closely with the right people and keeping communication clear.
- Look for ways to make our compliance processes better and easier for everyone.
- Manage your team’s workload and make sure they’re supported.
- Hold regular team catch-ups and 1-2-1s to support development.
- Help your team grow by tracking performance and supporting their progress.
You will need
• Qualified to NEBOSH National Diploma (level 6) or above
• Considerable and demonstrable compliance experience and thorough understanding of discipline specific statutory legal compliance. Such as LOLER, PUWER, COSHH, EAWR, EICR, GAS, PSSR, Legionella, Fire safety, F Gas and many more.
• Hold professional registration Such as CMIOSH or FIOSH
• Experience working with external regulatory bodies & contractors
• Senior stakeholder management and Influencing skills
• Advanced technical knowledge and understanding of hard services categories
• Understanding and experienced in ISO frameworks such as 45001, 9001 & 14001.
• Experience in a similar scale remote / site maintenance engineering business
