Graduation Internship – Intern software engineer / mathematics

General information

At ABB Marine & Ports, we are at the forefront of driving the evolution of sustainable shipping. Electrical propulsion, data‑driven decision support and integrated solutions for ship and shore from ABB are paving the way to a zero‑emission marine industry, providing greater efficiency and reliability to shipowners and operators worldwide.

Within ABB Marine & Ports, the Vessel & Voyage Performance department develops market‑leading routing solutions that support vessels in saving fuel, reducing costs and avoiding heavy weather. Using advanced algorithms, we calculate optimal routes by balancing safety, efficiency, performance and operational constraints.

For this team, we are looking for a motivated intern or graduation intern who wants to contribute to the next generation of vessel routing and optimization algorithms.

Your responsibilities

During this internship or graduation assignment, you will work on research‑ and development‑oriented topics related to vessel routing and performance optimization. Your activities may include:

– Researching and experimenting with state‑of‑the‑art search and optimization algorithms.
– Analyzing existing routing algorithms and identifying performance improvements.
– Exploring new algorithmic approaches or advanced routing features.
– Working with real‑world datasets and domain knowledge from the maritime industry.
– Translating research outcomes into practical software solutions and prototypes.

The exact scope can be adjusted to match your study requirements and graduation objectives.

Your background

– You are a WO (University) student in Computer Science or a closely related field.
– You have a solid understanding of search algorithms and algorithmic problem solving.
– You have strong software development skills.
– Experience with .NET and/or AWS cloud environments is a plus.
– You are able to work independently and accurately.
– You have a good command of English, both spoken and written.

What do we offer

A fun and challenging internship in which you get the opportunity to work in an international organization. We offer an internship allowance of €650 EUR (Applied Sciences) or €750 EUR (University) based on a 40‑hour working week. In addition, you can count on one fixed day off per month.

Travel expenses? No problem. In addition to your student public transport card, we reimburse 50% of travel costs.

You will work in a content‑rich internship where you directly contribute to future algorithmic and technological developments within ABB Marine & Ports. You will be guided by experienced engineers and researchers and have room for initiative, experimentation and deeper research.

Hybrid working is possible (approximately 50% working from home). The internship workload is 24–40 hours per week, depending on your study program, with a flexible start date and a minimum duration of 3 months.

Location: Utrecht, Netherlands
