Senior Application Technologist Beverages

 

Job Purpose

Conduct flavour application and provide technical expertise to drive operational excellence and establish successful cooperation with customers, according to business goals and EH&S policies.

Serve as technical expert and advisor to customers for Alcoholic Beverages Applications (Spirits, FABs, Beer, Wine etc.), marketing, sales and flavour creation.

 

This role will be based in Johannesburg and will report to the Technical Head SEA Taste & Wellbeing.

 

In this role you would be responsible for:

 

Flavour Application

· Execute daily brief-related tasks and apply knowledge during the flavour selection, evaluation and application development

· Lead evaluations of flavours in food applications for briefs, research projects and portfolio evaluations

· Select optimal flavours for projects according to specified requirements (i.e. customer, regulatory, legislation, cost) and suggest improvements for the most common applications

· Identify appropriate flavour delivery systems and technologies for customer projects in specific applications

Knowledge sharing & expertise

· Serve as technical expert and advisor to marketing, sales, flavour creation, and customers for specific applications

· Coach, train, and motivate technicians and technologists

· Establish and maintain effective relationships with a limited number of customers; able to gain their trust and respect

Data maintenance

· Actively maintain the flavour performance data for the flavour portfolio through evaluation in finished product and capture of profiles

Environmental Health & Safety

· Maintain a safe, clean and organized lab environment in accordance with EH&S policies and hold others accountable for following these guidelines

 

Your profile:

· Bachelor or Master's degree in Sugar & Alcohol technology / PG diploma in fermentation and alcohol technology/ Bachelor's or master's degree in food technology

· Minimum 6-8 years of experience in Alcoholic beverages blending, NPD or related area (preferred)

· Understanding of most alcoholic beverage applications, ingredients, and processes with practical experience in customers* food manufacturing environment

· Knowledge of various alcoholic beverages in the market (Fermented, Brewed Fermented, Distilled and Compound)

· Demonstrated expertise in recognizing undesired sensory characteristics in alcoholic beverage prototypes—whether arising from flavour interactions, raw materials, or processing conditions

· Knowledge of various ingredients & sourcing for developing alcohol blends

· Provide technical support and troubleshooting during customer trials or plant runs

· Understanding of many of the flavour reactions/interactions in common alcoholic beverage products and the ability to recommend flavour modifications based on performance

· Project management skills with the complete ability to lead large development projects

· Ability to lead projects for customers including customer visits

· Expert technical problem solving skills in alcoholic beverages and multiple beverage applications

· Ability to translate market trends into innovative products for key customers

· Ability to supervise and manage technicians and technologists
