General Manager, Africa

Lagos March 30, 2026 Full Time

About the Company

AltSchool Africa is one of the continent's leading online schools, accredited by the UK's ASIC. Since launching in 2021, the company has grown to serve learners across Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda, the UK, and beyond — offering programmes in engineering, data, product, business, and the creative economy.

With over 15,000 graduates and a mission to give millions of Africans the skills to build careers they love, AltSchool Africa is now expanding its platform to include graduate-level education through a new university offering master's degrees and MBAs in AI, business innovation, and data.

About the Role

AltSchool Africa is looking for a General Manager to lead its African operations. This is a senior leadership role with full accountability for the business on the continent — overseeing the team, driving growth, expanding into new markets, and playing a central role in the company's next chapter.

The founding team operates globally. The GM will be the most senior leader on the ground in Africa, empowered to make decisions, set direction, and build the business with a high degree of ownership and independence.

West Africa is the primary and established market. East Africa — particularly Kenya — is a strong and growing second market. The successful candidate will lead both.

This is an opportunity to take full ownership of a growing education business across Africa, with the backing of an experienced team and a clear mandate to build.

What you will do

  • Growth: Drive learner acquisition and revenue growth across Africa. Build and strengthen the marketing and distribution capability needed to reach more people.

  • Operations: Oversee day-to-day business operations with full responsibility for the P&L and the resources needed to deliver results.

  • Team: Lead a team of 21+ across operations, engineering, and support. Develop your people, raise capability across the organisation, and build a strong performance culture.

  • Expansion: West Africa is the home base. East Africa is the next growth frontier. You will define the approach and build the presence needed to grow meaningfully in both.

  • Partnerships: Identify and develop strategic partnerships, institutional relationships, and funding opportunities that support AltSchool Africa's mission and growth.

Who You Are

  • A proven operator. You have experience leading and scaling a business or business unit — ideally in a consumer-facing, digital, or education environment. You are comfortable owning outcomes, not just managing activity.

  • A strong people leader. You bring out the best in the people around you. You invest in developing your team, build trust quickly, and create an environment where people do their best work.

  • Commercially minded. You understand what drives growth, you can read a P&L, and you make sound decisions with the information available to you.

  • Market fluent. You have a solid understanding of how businesses grow in West and East Africa. You know the landscape, the nuances, and how to build meaningful relationships in these markets.

  • Self-directed. You work well with a high degree of autonomy. You are proactive, set your own agenda, and keep stakeholders informed while delivering independently.

What you have

  • 5+ years in a senior leadership, general management, or commercial role

  • Demonstrated experience growing a consumer or B2C business — EdTech, digital products, or tech-enabled services preferred

  • Experience owning a P&L and making resource decisions independently

  • Strong knowledge of the West African market; East Africa experience is a plus

  • Comfortable working in a fast-moving, entrepreneurial environment

  • Able and willing to be based in or regularly present in Lagos, Nigeria

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary

  • Performance-based equity available after the first year, aligned to business outcomes.
