Tool Room Manager - Position Summary
Zinga Industries in Reedsburg, WI is seeking an experience Tool Room Manager.
The Tool Room Manager is responsible for various Tool & Die Maker and Manager rolls including but not limited to designing, building, repairing, modifying, maintaining, and coordinating outside services for a wide range of molds, dies, fixtures, jigs, used in aluminum die-casting and related production operations.
This role supports manufacturing efficiency by ensuring that all tooling is precise, functional, and optimized for safety, quality, and performance.
The Tool Room Manager works closely with engineering, maintenance, and production teams to troubleshoot tooling issues and implement continuous improvement solutions.
Responsibilities
Tool Room Manager - Key Responsibilities
Tool & Die Maintenance
- Perform preventative maintenance, repairs, and adjustments on tooling to support uninterrupted production.
- Coordinate tooling repairs and replacement with outside vendors.
- Diagnose tooling wear, fatigue, or defects and implement corrective actions promptly.
- Ensure all tooling complies with safety and quality standards.
Tooling Fabrication & Assembly
- Manufacture, assemble, fit dies, tools, fixtures, and jigs according to engineering drawings, CAD models, sketches, or verbal instructions.
- Utilize a variety of equipment—including mills, lathes, grinders, sinker EDM, welders, heat treating, and precision measuring instruments—to produce high-accuracy components.
- Select appropriate materials, cutting tools, and machining methods to achieve required tolerances.
Troubleshooting & Process Support
- Work with production teams to identify root causes of tool-related issues and provide technical solutions.
- Support new product launches by manufacturing, modifying, or coordinating outside supply of tooling as required.
- Communicate effectively with engineers and operators to recommend improvements in tooling design, material selection, or production processes.
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate records of tooling changes, maintenance activities, and revisions.
- Interpret and adhere to technical drawings, specifications, and industry standards.
- Comply with all safety protocols, lockout/tagout procedures, and company policies.
Continuous Improvement
- Recommend and implement improvements to enhance tooling durability, reduce downtime, and improve process efficiency.
- Provide input on design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for tooling (DFT).
- Implementation of additional electronic record keeping.
Qualifications
Tool Room Manager - Qualifications
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or GED required; completion of an accredited Tool & Die apprenticeship program preferred.
- 5 years minimum experience as a Tool & Die Maker in an industrial manufacturing environment.
- Experience operating manual and CNC machining equipment.
- Experience with die cast tooling and trim dies strongly preferred.
Technical Skills
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, and engineering drawings.
- Proficient in machining practices, heat-treating, grinding, TIG welding, EDM, and metal fabrication.
- Knowledge of CNC programming is a plus (e.g., G-code, CAD/CAM software).
- Skilled in precision measurement tools (micrometers, calipers, height gauges, etc.)
Competencies
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- High attention to detail and ability to work to tight tolerances.
- Effective communication skills; ability to work independently and collaborate across departments.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
Tool Room Manager - Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs. regularly.
- Ability to work with machinery, hand tools, and in areas with varying temperatures and noise levels.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) required.
