About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Purpose

 

We are seeking a proactive and technically skilled Process Safety Engineer to join our Health & Safety team. This role is responsible for implementing process safety strategies and providing subject matter expertise to enhance safety performance across our operations.

 

Essential Duties

 

  • Implement strategies to manage process safety risks across operations.
  • Develop and support Process Safety Management Plans and systems (e.g., Management of Change, operational readiness).
  • Facilitate HAZOP studies and operational risk assessments.
  • Support integration of Bowtie risk analysis into broader risk frameworks.
  • Provide expert advice to Operations Managers, Superintendents, and Supervisors on process safety matters.
  • Conduct assurance activities for Process Safety Standards and related systems.
  • Monitor and maintain process safety metrics to evaluate performance.
  • Investigate and report process safety incidents.

 

Qualifications & Skills

 

  • Degree in Engineering or Science is essential. Postgraduate qualifications in Process Safety, Risk Management, or Occupational Health & Safety are highly regarded.
  • Minimum years of relevant working experience in process safety or related roles within high-risk industries (e.g., mining, oil & gas, chemicals).
  • Certifications in NEBOSH, IChemE, or equivalent safety certifications are advantageous.
  • Deep understanding of Process Plant operations and safety systems.]Proficiency in risk assessment methodologies (e.g., HAZOP, Bowtie, LOPA).
  • Familiarity with process safety software tools and data analysis.
  • Experience with incident investigation and root cause analysis.
  • Knowledge of regulatory compliance and industry standards (e.g., ISO, OSHA, COMAH).
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • High attention to detail and a proactive approach to safety.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement and safety culture.
  • Ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels.

  • Must be open to FIFO in PNG
  • Roster 22:20
  • Ability to complete a pre-employment medical assessment
  • Must have proof of a completed Police Clearance within the last six months
