OBGYN - CNMJob SummaryA birth/postpartum doula is a person trained to support families during childbirth and is an integral member of the inpatient birth team. Doulas provide continuous presence, information, emotional support, and physical comfort to a birthing person before, during, and immediately after childbirth. Doula care extends into the postpartum period, supporting breastfeeding and emotional and physical recovery from childbirth.
Essential Functions:
- Partner with members of the inpatient birth team to identify patients amenable to doula care and services on the labor and delivery and postpartum units (10%)
- Model and encourage effective communication and support informed decision making (20%)
- Provide non-medical comfort techniques for labor, including but not limited to positioning and movement, comforting touch, visualization, breathing techniques, affirmation, and aromatherapy (30%)
- Support and assist breastfeeding initiation (5%)
- Answer general questions about and assist with non-medical infant care (10%)
- Support the family and listen as they process their birth experience (10%)
- Seek to contribute to a culturally aligned, respectful, and positive birthing and postpartum experience (10%)
- Provide support to the birthing person’s support partner and/or family (5%)
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED Doula training and certification required for birth doula, postpartum doula, or both Required
Work Experience:
- less than 1 year Completion of a doula training program within 1 year or have worked as a doula attending births in the last year Required
Licenses:
- ICBD-Certified Birth Doula - DAA - Doula Accredited Association (various) Required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent interpersonal communication and customer service skills
- Ability to work well in a team of care providers
- Ability to provide patient support independently and be self-directed
- Knowledge of comfort measures to promote a sense of wellbeing during labor, birth, and postpartum
- Knowledge of positions to promote labor progress
- Ability to support breastfeeding initiation or willingness to learn
