Provide subject matter expertise and leadership for complex occupational and non occupational disability claims and appeals. This role supports team capability through training, coaching, and quality oversight, while directly managing high risk and complex cases.

Complex Case & Portfolio Management

  • Independently manage complex workers’ compensation and non occupational disability cases, including management level files and escalated claims.
  • Provide expert handling of high risk, complex, and strategically sensitive cases.
  • Ensure timely, high quality decision-making, documentation, and stakeholder communication within assigned caseload.

Workers’ Compensation Appeals Leadership

  • Manage and/or support complex appeals by preparing written submissions, coordinating evidence, and presenting at oral hearings and tribunal proceedings as required.
  • Conduct comprehensive case reviews to support team members preparing appeals, offering direction on medical, legislative, and entitlement considerations.
  • Partner with Legal on files involving reputational risk, significant liability, long term exposure, or precedent setting potential.
  • Lead post appeal reviews and stakeholder debriefs to ensure learning and continuous improvement.

Subject Matter Expertise & Quality Control

  • Serve as SME on provincial workers’ compensation legislation, policies, and appeal practices across Canada.
  • Provide expert guidance to internal and external stakeholders on complex claims and appeals.
  • Oversee quality control of all appeal submissions to ensure accuracy, policy alignment, and strong evidentiary rationale supporting cost mitigation outcomes.

Training, Coaching & Team Development

  • Lead development, modernization, and delivery of training programs for workers’ compensation, disability management, and appeals.
  • Support onboarding and continuous development of new hires through coaching, mentoring, and real time case audits post training.
  • Enhance procedures and training tools to align with corporate standards and evolving business needs.

Continuous Improvement & Risk Management

  • Analyze disability and claims data to identify trends, cost drivers, risks, and opportunities for operational improvement.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to improve processes, policies, and procedures, ensuring changes are well-documented, communicated, and risk assessed.
  • Drive initiatives that enhance quality, consistency, and cost effective outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Post-Secondary education in Disability Management, Occupational Health, Human Resources, Paralegal or related field
  • CDMP, CRTWC or equivalent certification is preferred
  • 5+ years Workers’ Compensation and Disability Management expertise preferred
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex occupational and non-occupational claims, including experience preparing written appeal submissions and participating in hearings or tribunals
  • Strong working knowledge of provincial workers’ compensation legislation, policies, and appeals processes across multiple Canadian jurisdictions.
  • Prior experience providing training and coaching
  • Strong planning, organizational and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to think strategically and prioritize in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to travel for business where necessary
  • Impressive knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Project, Visio)  
  • Experience developing, executing, and maintaining business process improvements
