DGM/General Manager – Ports
Role Objective:
Provide strategic and operational leadership for the detailed design & engineering of port and marine infrastructure projects. The role will be accountable for end-to-end engineering delivery, business profitability (P&L ownership), and client satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic & Business Leadership
- Define and execute the design & engineering strategy for port infrastructure (container terminals, bulk cargo berths, liquid jetties, breakwaters, dredging & reclamation, yard development).
- Manage P&L for the design & engineering vertical, ensuring revenue growth, profitability, and cost efficiency.
- Support business development & proposals by defining engineering scope, methodologies, and costings.
- Drive digital transformation (BIM, 3D modeling, simulation tools) to enhance design efficiency and quality.
Engineering & Technical Excellence:
- Lead the detailed design engineering of complex port & marine structures.
- Approve key engineering deliverables – design reports, drawings, technical specifications, BOQs.
- Ensure compliance with international codes & standards (PIANC, BS, IS, Eurocodes).
- Conduct value engineering, risk analysis, and constructability reviews.
- Oversee integration of civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and marine systems into holistic designs.
- Master Planning
Operational & Delivery Management:
- Lead multi-disciplinary engineering teams across geotechnical, structural, marine, and utilities disciplines.
- Manage engineering consultants, third parties, and technology partners.
- Ensure on-time delivery of design packages aligned with project schedules.
- Coordinate closely with EPC/construction teams for seamless execution.
Financial & P&L Responsibility:
- Deliver financial performance against defined revenue, margin, and cash flow targets.
- Monitor project budgets, billing, invoicing, and collection cycles.
- Ensure profitability through cost optimization and resource utilization.
- Drive continuous improvement in productivity, efficiency, and delivery models.
Client & Stakeholder Management:
- Act as the primary technical and commercial interface with clients and government authorities.
- Build long-term client relationships ensuring repeat and new business.
- Represent the organization in industry forums, technical committees, and client presentations.
Quality, HSE & Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with HSE norms, quality standards, and statutory regulations.
- Implement strong QA/QC systems for all engineering outputs.
- Champion sustainability and green engineering practices in port design.
Key Deliverables:
- End-to-end delivery of detailed engineering for multiple port projects.
- Achievement of P&L, revenue, and profitability targets.
- Strong client satisfaction and business growth.
- High-quality, safe, and innovative engineering solutions.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Education: B.E./B. Tech in Civil/Structural/Marine; M. Tech/M.E. in Port/Marine Engineering preferred.
- Experience: 20+ years in port & marine infrastructure engineering with at least 10+ years in leadership & P&L management roles.
- Track record in design leadership for large-scale port projects (terminals, breakwaters, dredging, offshore structures).
- Proficiency in engineering software (STAAD, Plaxis, SAP, MIKE 21, ANSYS, AutoCAD, BIM tools).
- Demonstrated ability to manage P&L, budgets, and large engineering teams.
