Craft Gardener
Airfield Estate requires a Craft Gardener who will support the day-to-day operations of the ornamental gardens and food production as part of the Airfield Garden team. The Craft Gardener will enjoy sharing their knowledge with our visitors across our tours, education programmes, corporate volunteering and the community garden.
Main Responsibilities
- Practical horticulture (e.g. managing trees and shrubs, herbaceous plants, turf care, pest/disease/weed control, compost, path care, plant propagation and hedgerows)
- Plantsmanship (e.g. the identification, recording and labelling of individual plants)
- Assist in the production of quality fruit, herbs and vegetables in Airfield polytunnels and food garden, including ground preparation, propagation, cultivation, harvesting, and monitoring of the overall health of soil, fruit and vegetables.
- Use and maintenance of garden/farm tools and machinery.
- Deliver garden tours to visitors as required.
- Engage our group of Community Gardeners and develop a strong working relationship with the Community Garden team.
- Work with students from our education partners to support their work placements over the course of the academic year.
- Welcome and engage with corporate volunteers on the estate, ensuring an enjoyable and meaningful experience for them.
- Perform any additional duties that may be assigned by the line manager as this role evolves.
Person Specification
- Excellent communication skills with an ability to engage with a variety of audiences.
- Horticultural qualification and practical horticultural experience.
- Ability to work within a team in all- weather conditions.
- Ability to follow instructions with good attention to detail.
- Competent DIY and machine operating skills. Chainsaw licence desirable.
- Relevant pesticide qualification PA1 & PA6.
- Full Irish driver's licence preferable but not essential.
- Passionate about food and sustainability.
- Be flexible in working hours in line with peaks and troughs of activity in the calendar year.
