Dentistry | Dental Hygiene-InterimThe Ohio State University College of Dentistry invites applications for a full-time (12 months) tenure track faculty member at the rank of assistant or associate professor in the Division of Dental Hygiene. This position offers an exciting opportunity to participate in a division that is structured on the principles of patient care through a comprehensive, integrated small-group practice with predoctoral and dental hygiene students, and an interdisciplinary model of health care delivery within a nationally ranked college of dentistry. The Division of Dental Hygiene has a traditional bachelor’s degree entry-level program, an online bachelor’s degree completion program, and an online Master’s of Science, Dental Hygiene graduate program.
The responsibility for this position will be an equal amount of scholarly engagement and teaching; directing and supporting didactic and clinical courses in any of the division’s three academic programs; and regularly serving as thesis advisor for master’s students. Additional responsibilities and opportunities include contributing to the college’s continuing education program, college governance, intramural faculty practice, and any other assignments as determined by the division chair.
The successful candidate will possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a desire to create an environment that promotes collegiality, collaboration, and cultural diversity among members of various education, research, and service communities. A willingness to serve as a role model and advocate for the ideals of professionalism and high ethical standards in scholarship and health science educational setting is essential. Successful candidates will also demonstrate the ability to engage students in active learning and demonstrate modern pedagogical practices in their teaching.
Education and Experience Requirements
Required: Qualified candidates must have graduated from a dental hygiene program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA); possess a graduate degree in dental hygiene or a related field; have a minimum of three years of clinical practice; and have didactic and/or clinical teaching experience in dental hygiene. Applicants must also possess a State of Ohio dental hygiene license or the qualifications to be eligible for a regular or limited dental hygiene teaching license in the State of Ohio.

Preferred
Candidates will possess the qualifications to be eligible for the administration and monitoring of nitrous oxide sedation, administration of local anesthesia, and the practice of expanded functions dental auxiliary (EFDA) or related procedures. A thesis-based master’s degree and/or a PhD or equivalent degree in a related field is preferred. Evidence of successful student mentoring, particularly master’s thesis mentoring, Candidates will be able to establish and maintain an independent scholarly focus.

Division of Dental Hygiene Information
In addition to the traditional entry-level program, the college offers a baccalaureate degree completion in dental hygiene that gives students a unique opportunity to complete a baccalaureate degree at a nationally recognized university in preparation for an exciting profession. This degree is catered to dental hygienists with an associate degree or certification in dental hygiene from a CODA-accredited dental program. Our program also gives students the option to select a specialization in dental hygiene education, public health, or an individualized plan proposed by the student. The schedule is flexible and students may enroll part-time or full-time. Dental hygiene courses are offered in a distance format designed to be convenient for working students.
The College of Dentistry is further distinguished by offering an Expanded Functions for the Dental Auxiliary (EFDA) program, which is designed to prepare certified dental Assistants or registered dental hygienists to apply for the EFDA board examination administered by the Commission on Dental Testing in Ohio and to provide experiences

Finally, keenly aware that the number of dental hygiene programs across the country continues to grow at a rapid rate while the number of faculty members who are qualified to teach the programs has not kept pace, the College of Dentistry has answered the need by offering the first Master’s in Dental Hygiene (MS DH) degree in Ohio for students who wish to become dental educators and leaders in the field.

Our college is the first state-supported dental school in Ohio and consists of eleven academic divisions representing all major dental specialties. The divisions offer both patient care services and academic programs, allowing dentists to train as specialists. Our Outreach and Engagement activities include over 60 active programs and more than 40 extramural sites, which continue to expand.
