[2026-2027] Director of Teaching and Learning (STEM) - High School

Position Overview:

The Director of Teaching and Learning reports to the Assistant Principal of Instruction. In support of KIPP NYC College Prep’s mission, the Director of Instruction is responsible for leading and building the capacity of all Department Heads and teachers to implement and continuously develop exceptional instruction, a strong focus on results and continuous improvement, and a culture of consistent, high expectations. The Director of Instruction works from the belief that excellent schools develop and sustain the capacity for teachers to lead and take ownership of their classrooms, grade levels, and the school’s success. The Director of Instruction manages and guides teachers and teacher leaders to be their most effective in empowering students to achieve at high levels and grow in personal character. The ideal candidate possesses instructional and coaching experience in a core subject area. 

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Lead People: Develop & Manage Teachers, Leaders, and Teams

  • Supervise the recruitment and hiring of new team members at both campuses.
  • Advise the Assistant Principal of Instruction on processes and protocols for improving school achievement. 
  • Collaborate with the AP of Instruction to plan and implement teacher professional development and whole-school professional development sessions. 
  • Manage, coach, and support Department Heads in each building, and teachers or ADHs on their teams as needed.  
  • Schedule and conduct weekly or biweekly observations for the people they manage.
  • Schedule and execute a weekly or biweekly O3 calendar for the people they manage.
  • Identify the highest leverage skills for teachers and leaders to work on and track progress toward goals in SMG. 
  • Write performance reviews twice per year and hold one-to-one conversations with team members to communicate progress towards goals.
  • Manage and coordinate regular walkthrough schedules with leaders at both campuses. 
  • Determine PD needs for Instructional leaders and create turnkey slides for DHs. 
  • Manage stakeholder (parent/guardian/dean/counselor) concerns that have been brought to your attention.
  • Assist in the mediation of conflicts amongst team members.
  • Return to work 2 days before the entire staff returns for Manager PD and preparations. 
  • Attend applicable Manager PDs (2-3 per semester).

 Lead Results: Driving Outcomes through Strategic Planning & Prioritization

  • Utilize historic performance and development data to set goals and priorities for the department.
  • Analyze and communicate progress towards performance goals at least twice per quarter and coordinate with the team to plan appropriate reteaches and interventions.
  • Lead ongoing curriculum development to ensure it is vertically and standards aligned and culturally responsive.
  • Supervise Department data to ensure alignment in trend identification and responsive planning across campuses. 

Serve on School Leadership Team:

  • Identify school-wide challenges, present solutions, and garner colleague support to drive positive change. 
  • Support with approximately 15 late duties per year. 
  • Help organize and execute Open School Night, Parent Open Houses, and award ceremonies.
  • Supervise the alignment of course offerings, including course descriptions and prerequisites.
  • Support with rolling out schoolwide initiatives. 
  • Support with writing the KIPP Notes  instructional page.

About KIPP NYC College Prep High School:
In August 2009, KIPP NYC College Prep High School (CPHS) opened its doors to serve students graduating from KIPP middle schools in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan, as well as other New York City students seeking a rigorous, college-preparatory high school program.

KIPP NYC College Prep builds on the key elements of their successful elementary and middle schools, including more time in school, a focus on student achievement, highly qualified and committed faculty, and a school culture that supports success in learning.

Located in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx, CPHS currently educates over 2,000 students in grades 9–12 across two locations. Over 90% of students enroll in at least one type of rigorous academic offering, including 16 Advanced Placement (AP) courses, 17 Dual Enrollment courses, and 13 Honors courses.

In addition to a wide range of electives and over 25 clubs, the school offers 13 varsity and junior varsity sports programs. CPHS also provides a comprehensive college and career counseling department to ensure students engage in enriching summer programming, develop individual career plans, prepare fully for the SAT, and enroll in a college or career pathway that meets their interests, abilities, and financial needs.

Since its founding, 99% of CPHS students have graduated from high school, 91% have matriculated to a 2- or 4-year college, and 49% have earned a college degree within six or more years.

New for 2026-2027: Our high school will expand to an additional facility beginning in 2026–2027, transitioning into a Lower School and Upper School model! Students will select an industry concentration aligned with their interests and goals, focusing their studies in grades 11–12 on that pathway. The new building, located just a seven-minute walk from our current state-of-the-art campus at 75 Canal St. West, will feature 40 classrooms, eight state-of-the-art science labs, double gymnasiums, a commercial kitchen and food prep space, a cafetorium with an outdoor patio, a 10,000 sq. ft. rooftop play space, and dedicated dance, art, music, health, weight, and cardio rooms.

  • New York State teacher certification in the appropriate content area
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • At least three years of leadership experience as a department head or equivalent position

  • Demonstrated success in developing academic programs and academic culture
  • Demonstrated success in planning staff professional development and leading teams of teachers

Compensation and Benefits:

KIPP NYC offers a competitive salary ranging from $111,457 - $195,427. Salaries are determined using an equitable compensation scale that accounts for years of experience relevant to the role and the scope of responsibility within the role. KIPP NYC will evaluate a candidate’s years of experience at point of hire to determine the step/level a new hire will be placed within our Dean salary scale.
