Key Takeaways

  • 75% of U.S. employers use automated applicant tracking systems to screen resumes before a human reviews them (Harvard Business School & Accenture, 2021)
  • The most common ATS failures are missing keywords, incompatible formatting, and incorrect file types
  • ResumeGeni scores your resume across 8 parsing layers — modeled on the same steps enterprise ATS platforms like Workday, Greenhouse, and Taleo use to evaluate candidates

How ATS Resume Scoring Works

Applicant tracking systems parse your resume into structured data — extracting your name, contact info, work history, skills, and education — then score how well that data matches the job requirements. Many ATS rejections happen because the parser couldn't extract critical fields, not because the candidate wasn't qualified.

LayerWhat It ChecksWhy It Matters
Document extractionFile format, encoding, readabilityCorrupted or image-only PDFs fail immediately
Layout analysisTables, columns, headers, footersMulti-column layouts break field extraction
Section detectionExperience, education, skills headingsNon-standard headings cause sections to be missed
Field mappingName, email, phone, dates, titlesMissing contact info is a common cause of immediate rejection
Keyword matchingJob-specific terms, skills, certificationsKeyword overlap affects recruiter search visibility and ATS scoring
Chronology checkDate ordering, gap detectionReverse-chronological order is expected by most ATS
QuantificationMetrics, numbers, measurable outcomesQuantified achievements help human reviewers and some scoring models

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ResumeGeni free?
Yes. ResumeGeni is currently in beta — ATS analysis, scoring, and initial improvement suggestions are free with no signup required. Full guidance and saved reports may require a free account.
What file formats are supported?
PDF, DOCX, DOC, TXT, RTF, ODT, and Apple Pages. PDF and DOCX are recommended for best ATS compatibility.
How is the ATS score calculated?
Your resume is processed through an 8-layer parsing pipeline that extracts structured data the same way enterprise ATS platforms do. The score reflects how completely and accurately your resume can be parsed, plus how well your content matches common ATS ranking criteria.
Can ATS read PDF resumes?
Yes, but not all PDFs are equal. Text-based PDFs parse well. Image-only PDFs (scanned documents) and PDFs with complex tables or multi-column layouts often fail ATS parsing. Our analyzer will flag these issues.
How do I improve my ATS score?
Focus on three areas: use a clean single-column format, include keywords from the job description naturally in your experience bullets, and ensure all sections (contact, experience, education, skills) use standard headings.

Synquery · Boston

Senior AI Engineer

Location: Boston (preferred) or Nashville | Travel: ~15% | Reports to: CTO

About Synquery

Synquery is a fast-growing AI research company that is disrupting how organizations access and scale human expertise. Backed by top-tier venture capital firms including Afore Capital, Audacious Ventures, and Caesar Ventures, we partner with leading consulting firms and investors to unlock new ways of working. Our AI-powered platform delivers expert insights in days rather than weeks, revolutionizing how our clients conduct due diligence, competitive intelligence, and market research.

Our culture values speed, entrepreneurial thinking, and the drive to win. As we continue our rapid growth, we're looking for exceptional engineers who want to build world-class AI systems and help shape the future of AI in business.

The Role

We are looking for an experienced Senior AI Software Engineer to join us at one of the most exciting moments in Synquery's growth. This is a broad, high-impact role — you will have your fingerprints across the full product, working directly alongside the CTO to design and build the systems that power our platform end-to-end.

Our platform processes hundreds of thousands of data points across a sophisticated expert network automation pipeline: identifying the right experts, vetting their credentials, confirming availability and mutual fit, and running AI-driven interviews that extract meaningful insights — all delivered to some of the most demanding clients in consulting and investing. The technical challenges are real, the stakes are high, and the pace is fast.

At our core, we are on a mission to give everyone access to expert-level answers to questions that have no digital answer — the kind of knowledge that lives only in the minds of people who have spent decades in an industry. You will be building the AI infrastructure that makes that possible: resilient, scalable, and genuinely pushing the frontier of what agentic AI can do in the real world.

What You'll Do

Delivery & Execution

  • Balance two modes of engineering excellence: pushing the boundaries of what's possible with innovative AI-driven automation through rapid PoCs, and delivering the high-quality, production-ready agentic solutions that our clients depend on

  • Be a strong and reliable partner — own projects end-to-end with a high on-time delivery rate, from early prototype to production release

  • Hit the ground running: within your first 30 days, deliver a working prototype of an agentic solution integrated into our Sourcing pipeline

Architecture & Engineering Standards

  • Design and build extremely resilient, horizontally scalable systems that support the business as it grows in speed and complexity

  • Champion extensible, clean interfaces so new features can be added without reworking existing foundations

  • Proactively collaborate with security teams to meet compliance requirements (e.g. SOC2) and maintain our uptime standards

AI Engineering, Product Collaboration and Culture

  • Work closely with the CTO, Ops, and Product to translate customer and business needs into well-designed AI solutions — agentic AI is core to what we build and you'll be at the center of it

  • Be an active contributor to our engineering culture: share relevant articles, research, or learnings with the team regularly and promote a mindset of continuous improvement and personal accountability

What We're Looking For

  • Experience: 5+ years as a Python developer, with strong depth across web development, distributed systems, and AI — including LLMs and agentic systems

  • AI, GenAI & Agentic AI: 5+ years building on a strong foundation in traditional AI — ML, NLP, statistical learning — complemented by demonstrated hands-on experience with LLM frameworks and agentic tooling such as LangChain, LangSmith, LiveKit, Pipecat, or equivalent

  • Engineering Fundamentals: Excellent command of OOP and functional programming; expertise in scalable, high-reliability system design

  • Security & Compliance: Familiarity with compliance standards such as SOC2 and a proactive approach to working with security teams

  • Collaboration: Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders; you write clean code and give clear, constructive code reviews

  • Mindset: Passion for innovation, continuous improvement, and personal accountability — you thrive in a fast-paced environment and don't wait to be told what to do

  • Travel: This role may require occasional domestic and international travel; all standard travel expenses are covered per company policy

Why Join Synquery?

  • Be at the forefront of AI research and real-world deployment

  • Work on hard technical problems that directly shape our product and platform

  • Join a high-growth startup backed by leading investors

  • Competitive salary, benefits, and meaningful equity package

⚡ Synquery is for people who want to win. If you're a talented engineer who's passionate about building cutting-edge AI systems and shaping the future of AI in business, we'd love to hear from you.
