Key Takeaways

  • 75% of U.S. employers use automated applicant tracking systems to screen resumes before a human reviews them (Harvard Business School & Accenture, 2021)
  • The most common ATS failures are missing keywords, incompatible formatting, and incorrect file types
  • ResumeGeni scores your resume across 8 parsing layers — modeled on the same steps enterprise ATS platforms like Workday, Greenhouse, and Taleo use to evaluate candidates

How ATS Resume Scoring Works

Applicant tracking systems parse your resume into structured data — extracting your name, contact info, work history, skills, and education — then score how well that data matches the job requirements. Many ATS rejections happen because the parser couldn't extract critical fields, not because the candidate wasn't qualified.

LayerWhat It ChecksWhy It Matters
Document extractionFile format, encoding, readabilityCorrupted or image-only PDFs fail immediately
Layout analysisTables, columns, headers, footersMulti-column layouts break field extraction
Section detectionExperience, education, skills headingsNon-standard headings cause sections to be missed
Field mappingName, email, phone, dates, titlesMissing contact info is a common cause of immediate rejection
Keyword matchingJob-specific terms, skills, certificationsKeyword overlap affects recruiter search visibility and ATS scoring
Chronology checkDate ordering, gap detectionReverse-chronological order is expected by most ATS
QuantificationMetrics, numbers, measurable outcomesQuantified achievements help human reviewers and some scoring models

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ResumeGeni free?
Yes. ResumeGeni is currently in beta — ATS analysis, scoring, and initial improvement suggestions are free with no signup required. Full guidance and saved reports may require a free account.
What file formats are supported?
PDF, DOCX, DOC, TXT, RTF, ODT, and Apple Pages. PDF and DOCX are recommended for best ATS compatibility.
How is the ATS score calculated?
Your resume is processed through an 8-layer parsing pipeline that extracts structured data the same way enterprise ATS platforms do. The score reflects how completely and accurately your resume can be parsed, plus how well your content matches common ATS ranking criteria.
Can ATS read PDF resumes?
Yes, but not all PDFs are equal. Text-based PDFs parse well. Image-only PDFs (scanned documents) and PDFs with complex tables or multi-column layouts often fail ATS parsing. Our analyzer will flag these issues.
How do I improve my ATS score?
Focus on three areas: use a clean single-column format, include keywords from the job description naturally in your experience bullets, and ensure all sections (contact, experience, education, skills) use standard headings.

ScreenCloud · Watthana

Hello, we’re ScreenCloud!

Founded in 2015 and with 10,000+ customers around the globe, ScreenCloud is a cloud-based SaaS company, employing over 100 people in our Bangkok, Belfast, LA, Charlotte and London hubs.

At ScreenCloud, we’re hard at work helping businesses to make stronger connections at scale, and with those who are most important to them; their employees & their customers. By using the screens on their walls & the content in their systems, we enable the sales, productivity & engagement that keep our customers’ businesses thriving.
We’re very proud of our product and we’re also incredibly proud of our people. It’s our ‘ScreenClouders’ and the culture they nurture that will take us where other companies just can’t go. So if you’re someone looking to join a team of talented individuals, apply below!

The Role:

Studio is the app that powers all of ScreenCloud. Users sign up, then use Studio as a CMS to design content for screens, access our app store, manage their physical devices, and everything else. It’s powered by React, GraphQL and Postgres. But now it’s time to write the next generation of Studio, starting from a clean slate and the latest in modern web development; hybrid apps with NextJS, blazing performance with edge networks, and an API gateway designed for anyone to build on.

You’ll be part of a team wholly responsible for each project it takes on, meaning Product/Design/Dev/QA all in the one team, with full power to shape its project. You’ll also help drive and ensure we strive for technical excellence when it comes to building and maintaining our modern web apps.

And of course being a product for TV screens, the end result is also a super visual experience that will keep a curious dev engaged for a long while to come!

In this role, you will:

  • Write primarily in TypeScript on Node and deploy to AWS to deliver the APIs and infrastructure that powers our whole system end to end.

  • Build efficient and reusable UIs utilising server components, SSR and CSR, understanding the tradeoffs and advantages in each case

  • Help organise our release processes, contributing to deployments across our stack using Vercel, Pulumi and AWS

  • Design solutions that reduce complexity and orchestration across independent microservices (including making use of modern cloud native components that can do some of the heavy lifting for you, like hosted event buses and API Gateways)

  • Explore our AI prototypes and experiment with how the workflows AI enables, that can make work lives better for our users every day

  • Become a core member of the Studio group, building tools and best practices to make it easier for developers across the company to build on and extend our core CMS.

  • Push us to experiment and try new techniques to constantly improve the quality of our platform (We're particularly interested in approaches to make useful monitoring effortless and maximise reliability)

  • Collaborate with designers, testers and product owners to ensure the customer experience is perfect.

  • Get stuck in with us on prototypes and MVPs to experiment with the constant stream of ideas for where we take digital signage content and management next.

You will be a great fit for this role if..

  •  You have demonstrated experience building REST or GraphQL services with JavaScript/TypeScript. You may also have worked in similar languages, and able to discuss the benefits/tradeoffs of how you design a system.

  • You have worked with AWS cloud provider in the past, and can confidently discuss the trade-offs and opportunities in designing real-life systems on these products.

  • You have experience designing solutions to integrate multiple isolated services together in a scalable and understandable way.

  • You can help lead whiteboard sessions to design new solutions, and discuss the flows of data across those systems.

  • You document your work, ensuring knowledge is readily available for both other members of the team, including the frontend developers hitting your services, but equally for new developers who may come across it many months down the line.

  • You relish the hard work of demonstrating quality through accurate monitoring and alerting, as well as effective logging for when things do go wrong.

  • You understand that the user's experience, both in setting up an app and then seeing it on screen is the north star metric for any work we do. The more complexity we can abstract away from them, the better our systems are!

  • You work best in small teams and deliver the highest quality code when you’re surrounded by great people.

  • You go out of your way to share your knowledge and make difficult concepts understandable for the whole team.

Bonus Skills

  • NoSQL experience with services like DynamoDB, MongoDB and Redis.

  • GraphQL services, such as Apollo.

  • Database design and query optimisation on SQL services (We use Postgres)

  • Working on modern webapps, built with tools like React, Vue and Next.

  • APIs built in Node (Serverless, Express, Fastify, Lambda etc).

  • Experience implementing generative AI features.

  • Enhancing build and deploy pipeline with tools like GitHub Actions, Pulumi and etc to improve reliability and performance.
