Key Takeaways

  • 75% of U.S. employers use automated applicant tracking systems to screen resumes before a human reviews them (Harvard Business School & Accenture, 2021)
  • The most common ATS failures are missing keywords, incompatible formatting, and incorrect file types
  • ResumeGeni scores your resume across 8 parsing layers — modeled on the same steps enterprise ATS platforms like Workday, Greenhouse, and Taleo use to evaluate candidates

How ATS Resume Scoring Works

Applicant tracking systems parse your resume into structured data — extracting your name, contact info, work history, skills, and education — then score how well that data matches the job requirements. Many ATS rejections happen because the parser couldn't extract critical fields, not because the candidate wasn't qualified.

LayerWhat It ChecksWhy It Matters
Document extractionFile format, encoding, readabilityCorrupted or image-only PDFs fail immediately
Layout analysisTables, columns, headers, footersMulti-column layouts break field extraction
Section detectionExperience, education, skills headingsNon-standard headings cause sections to be missed
Field mappingName, email, phone, dates, titlesMissing contact info is a common cause of immediate rejection
Keyword matchingJob-specific terms, skills, certificationsKeyword overlap affects recruiter search visibility and ATS scoring
Chronology checkDate ordering, gap detectionReverse-chronological order is expected by most ATS
QuantificationMetrics, numbers, measurable outcomesQuantified achievements help human reviewers and some scoring models

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ResumeGeni free?
Yes. ResumeGeni is currently in beta — ATS analysis, scoring, and initial improvement suggestions are free with no signup required. Full guidance and saved reports may require a free account.
What file formats are supported?
PDF, DOCX, DOC, TXT, RTF, ODT, and Apple Pages. PDF and DOCX are recommended for best ATS compatibility.
How is the ATS score calculated?
Your resume is processed through an 8-layer parsing pipeline that extracts structured data the same way enterprise ATS platforms do. The score reflects how completely and accurately your resume can be parsed, plus how well your content matches common ATS ranking criteria.
Can ATS read PDF resumes?
Yes, but not all PDFs are equal. Text-based PDFs parse well. Image-only PDFs (scanned documents) and PDFs with complex tables or multi-column layouts often fail ATS parsing. Our analyzer will flag these issues.
How do I improve my ATS score?
Focus on three areas: use a clean single-column format, include keywords from the job description naturally in your experience bullets, and ensure all sections (contact, experience, education, skills) use standard headings.

About Reach Security:

Reach Security (https://reach.security) builds self-driving cybersecurity. Reach employs the first generative AI for cybersecurity to oversee an organization's current security stack, aiming to achieve the best possible security posture with the products already in use.

About the Role:

We are seeking backend Software Engineers at all levels to drive the development of various critical backend systems to support product engineering including, platform, infrastructure, APIs, databases and data pipelines. This position is integral in supporting our product's ability to deliver high-quality services by managing and processing large volumes of data, ensuring robust infrastructure, developing efficient data pipelines, and providing reliable APIs for internal and external use. You will tackle challenges across multiple domains, such as optimizing data storage and retrieval in databases, ensuring data integrity and efficiency in our pipelines, and building scalable APIs to support our application's growing needs. By contributing across these areas, you will play a key role in enhancing our product's performance, scalability, and reliability. Candidates with a strong foundation in Python, algorithms, data structures, system design, and a versatile skill set spanning data engineering, database management, and API development will find this role both challenging and rewarding.

The ideal candidate is a motivated problem solver who prioritizes high-quality solutions and excels in navigating ambiguity. As an early team member, you will have the opportunity to take ownership of various aspects of our backend from day one. Your role will be pivotal in establishing engineering best practices, balancing engineering priorities with business needs, and identifying innovative approaches to deliver outstanding value to our users. Your engineering knowledge will be applied by designing top-notch architectures, offering insightful feedback on technical designs, solving difficult problems and conducting thorough code reviews, all aimed at ensuring the software we build is both maintainable and dependable.

In this role, you will:

  • Execute complex backend software engineering projects focusing on APIs, data processing, infrastructure and platform.

  • Drive the execution of key engineering initiatives.

  • Fostering a culture of technical excellence.

  • Be self-motivated, proactive, and able to work independently in a fast-paced environment.

  • Author technical proposals to document and align teams on the design of complex projects.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve production issues, minimizing downtime and impact on business operations.

Success in this role requires:

  • 3+ years of experience in software engineering, with a focus on backend, platform or system programming.

  • Keen sense for identifying business needs and can communicate a clear vision for implementing solutions.

  • Strong communication skills, capable of explaining technical issues to non-technical audiences.

  • Experience with Python and it's ecosystem.

  • Experience designing and building multi-tenant SaaS platforms that ensure data isolation, scalability, and robust security.

  • Experience with cloud service providers in a production setting (AWS, Azure, GCP, etc.).

  • Experience with relational databases in a production setting.

  • Deep understanding of computer science fundamentals like data structures, algorithms, and computational complexity.

  • Proficiency in system design.

  • Skill in data architecture and data modeling.
