Key Takeaways

  • 75% of U.S. employers use automated applicant tracking systems to screen resumes before a human reviews them (Harvard Business School & Accenture, 2021)
  • The most common ATS failures are missing keywords, incompatible formatting, and incorrect file types
  • ResumeGeni scores your resume across 8 parsing layers — modeled on the same steps enterprise ATS platforms like Workday, Greenhouse, and Taleo use to evaluate candidates

How ATS Resume Scoring Works

Applicant tracking systems parse your resume into structured data — extracting your name, contact info, work history, skills, and education — then score how well that data matches the job requirements. Many ATS rejections happen because the parser couldn't extract critical fields, not because the candidate wasn't qualified.

LayerWhat It ChecksWhy It Matters
Document extractionFile format, encoding, readabilityCorrupted or image-only PDFs fail immediately
Layout analysisTables, columns, headers, footersMulti-column layouts break field extraction
Section detectionExperience, education, skills headingsNon-standard headings cause sections to be missed
Field mappingName, email, phone, dates, titlesMissing contact info is a common cause of immediate rejection

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ResumeGeni free?
Yes. ResumeGeni is currently in beta — ATS analysis, scoring, and initial improvement suggestions are free with no signup required. Full guidance and saved reports may require a free account.
What file formats are supported?
PDF, DOCX, DOC, TXT, RTF, ODT, and Apple Pages. PDF and DOCX are recommended for best ATS compatibility.
How is the ATS score calculated?
Your resume is processed through an 8-layer parsing pipeline that extracts structured data the same way enterprise ATS platforms do. The score reflects how completely and accurately your resume can be parsed, plus how well your content matches common ATS ranking criteria.
Can ATS read PDF resumes?
Yes, but not all PDFs are equal. Text-based PDFs parse well. Image-only PDFs (scanned documents) and PDFs with complex tables or multi-column layouts often fail ATS parsing. Our analyzer will flag these issues.
How do I improve my ATS score?
Focus on three areas: use a clean single-column format, include keywords from the job description naturally in your experience bullets, and ensure all sections (contact, experience, education, skills) use standard headings.

Duties, Responsibilities & Other

KCI is seeking an experienced Senior Project Manager to help lead and expand our Construction Engineering practice in our New York City office. Reporting to the Regional Practice Leader, this role is responsible for delivering complex, construction-driven engineering solutions while supporting the continued growth of the practice across the NYC market.

KCI’s Construction Engineering team works directly with general contractors, specialty contractors, fabricators, erectors, and project teams to solve complex construction challenges before they reach the field. By combining structural engineering expertise with hands-on construction experience, we develop practical, buildable solutions that control risk, protect schedule, and improve constructability. Our work spans both vertical building construction and horizontal infrastructure, including bridge and transportation projects, and candidates with experience across both markets, or the ability to quickly adapt between them, are strongly preferred.

Our team provides engineering support throughout all phases of construction, from pre-construction planning and procurement through execution and project completion. Services include construction logistics and site planning, erection and demolition engineering, temporary works and shoring design, crane and hoist engineering, rigging and heavy lift analysis, and delegated structural design, including steel connections and specialty structural systems.

We specialize in the realities of construction, where structures are in temporary and often critical conditions, and where site constraints, sequencing, and access drive engineering decisions. Our engineers understand not just how structures are designed, but how they are actually built, and develop solutions that work in the field, not just on paper.

This role is ideal for a senior structural or construction engineer who thrives in a fast-paced, contractor-driven environment and is passionate about leading teams, solving complex construction challenges, and helping grow a high-performing construction engineering practice in one of the most demanding construction markets in the country. This position will play a key role in shaping project delivery, mentoring staff, and expanding KCI’s construction engineering presence across the NYC region.

Key Responsibilities

Project & Practice Leadership

  • Lead and manage multiple complex construction engineering projects simultaneously, from pre-construction through project execution and closeout.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for key clients, including general contractors, fabricators, erectors, and developers, maintaining strong relationships and ensuring successful project delivery.
  • Oversee and coordinate project teams across disciplines, including engineers, designers, and subconsultants, ensuring alignment with project objectives, schedules, and budgets.
  • Provide leadership and direction on project execution strategies, including constructability, sequencing, and means and methods, to address evolving site conditions and construction challenges.
  • Act as a senior escalation point for technical and project-related issues, providing guidance and decision-making support to project teams.
  • Plan and manage project staffing, resource allocation, and workload distribution across multiple active projects.
  • Ensure consistent delivery of high-quality work product across projects, including adherence to internal QA/QC processes and industry standards.
  • Monitor project performance, including scope, schedule, budget, and risk, and take proactive measures to maintain alignment with client expectations and project goals.
  • Collaborate with practice leadership to support the growth and development of the Construction Engineering group, including improving project delivery processes and expanding service capabilities.
  • Contribute to strategic planning for project pursuits, staffing needs, and long-term growth of the practice.

Technical Leadership & Oversight

  • Provide senior-level technical leadership across a wide range of construction engineering services, including temporary works design, shoring and demolition engineering, construction logistics, crane and hoist engineering, rigging and heavy lift analysis, erection sequencing, and delegated structural design.
  • Serve as a technical authority for complex projects, guiding engineering approaches and developing practical, field-driven solutions that address constructability, sequencing, and site constraints.
  • Lead the development and review of engineering calculations, drawings, and technical reports to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable codes, standards, and project requirements.
  • Oversee and enforce QA/QC processes across projects, ensuring consistency and quality of deliverables across the Construction Engineering team.
  • Evaluate structures in temporary and partially completed conditions, ensuring stability and load path integrity throughout all stages of construction.
  • Provide technical guidance to project teams during all phases of work, including pre-construction planning, active construction support, and field troubleshooting.
  • Support coordination with contractors, fabricators, erectors, and equipment suppliers to develop efficient and constructible engineering solutions.
  • Participate in site visits and field evaluations to assess construction conditions, verify assumptions, and assist in resolving complex field issues.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of internal engineering standards, tools, and best practices within the Construction Engineering group.
  • Experience with NYC-specific construction engineering requirements, including DOB filings, crane and derrick regulations, and urban construction constraints, is strongly preferred.

Team Development & Leadership

  • Mentor and develop Project Managers, engineers, and junior staff, providing technical guidance and supporting career growth.
  • Support project staffing, workload balancing, and team coordination across multiple active projects.
  • Foster a collaborative, problem-solving culture focused on constructability, quality, and responsiveness to field conditions.
  • Provide input on staff performance, training needs, and professional development.
  • Assist in recruiting and onboarding efforts to support the continued growth of the Construction Engineering team.

Financial and Project Performance

  • Manage project financial performance, including budgets, utilization, invoicing, and overall project profitability.
  • Develop scopes of work, schedules, and fee proposals aligned with project complexity and client expectations.
  • Monitor project progress and proactively address scope, schedule, and budget risks.
  • Ensure projects are delivered efficiently, on schedule, and in alignment with client and business objectives.
  • Support backlog development by contributing to repeat work and expanding existing client engagements.

Business Development

  • Maintain and grow relationships with general contractors, fabricators, erectors, and developers to support repeat business and long-term partnerships.
  • Identify and pursue new project opportunities within the construction engineering market, particularly in the NYC region.
  • Lead or support proposal development, including scope definition, fee development, and client coordination.
  • Represent KCI in the industry through client meetings, site visits, and professional networking activities.
  • Contribute to strategic growth initiatives and market positioning of KCI’s Construction Engineering services.

Specialized Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (ABET-accredited).
  • 10+ years of experience in structural or construction engineering, with a strong focus on construction-phase services such as temporary works, shoring, demolition, erection engineering, or contractor means and methods.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex projects and leading multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Strong understanding of structural analysis, load paths, and construction sequencing, including evaluation of structures in temporary and partially completed conditions.
  • Proven ability to work directly with contractors, fabricators, and erection teams to develop practical, constructible solutions.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
