Key Takeaways

  • 75% of U.S. employers use automated applicant tracking systems to screen resumes before a human reviews them (Harvard Business School & Accenture, 2021)
  • The most common ATS failures are missing keywords, incompatible formatting, and incorrect file types
  • ResumeGeni scores your resume across 8 parsing layers — modeled on the same steps enterprise ATS platforms like Workday, Greenhouse, and Taleo use to evaluate candidates

How ATS Resume Scoring Works

Applicant tracking systems parse your resume into structured data — extracting your name, contact info, work history, skills, and education — then score how well that data matches the job requirements. Many ATS rejections happen because the parser couldn't extract critical fields, not because the candidate wasn't qualified.

LayerWhat It ChecksWhy It Matters
Document extractionFile format, encoding, readabilityCorrupted or image-only PDFs fail immediately
Layout analysisTables, columns, headers, footersMulti-column layouts break field extraction
Section detectionExperience, education, skills headingsNon-standard headings cause sections to be missed
Field mappingName, email, phone, dates, titlesMissing contact info is a common cause of immediate rejection
Keyword matchingJob-specific terms, skills, certificationsKeyword overlap affects recruiter search visibility and ATS scoring
Chronology checkDate ordering, gap detectionReverse-chronological order is expected by most ATS
QuantificationMetrics, numbers, measurable outcomesQuantified achievements help human reviewers and some scoring models

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ResumeGeni free?
Yes. ResumeGeni is currently in beta — ATS analysis, scoring, and initial improvement suggestions are free with no signup required. Full guidance and saved reports may require a free account.
What file formats are supported?
PDF, DOCX, DOC, TXT, RTF, ODT, and Apple Pages. PDF and DOCX are recommended for best ATS compatibility.
How is the ATS score calculated?
Your resume is processed through an 8-layer parsing pipeline that extracts structured data the same way enterprise ATS platforms do. The score reflects how completely and accurately your resume can be parsed, plus how well your content matches common ATS ranking criteria.
Can ATS read PDF resumes?
Yes, but not all PDFs are equal. Text-based PDFs parse well. Image-only PDFs (scanned documents) and PDFs with complex tables or multi-column layouts often fail ATS parsing. Our analyzer will flag these issues.
How do I improve my ATS score?
Focus on three areas: use a clean single-column format, include keywords from the job description naturally in your experience bullets, and ensure all sections (contact, experience, education, skills) use standard headings.

Company Overview

Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We’ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onward toward certifying the Joby aircraft, scaling our manufacturing, and launching our initial commercial service.

Overview

Joby Aviation is seeking a highly organized, passionate individual to join our quality assurance team as an on-site NDT Responsible Level III in Marina, CA. As we are building and certifying an advanced composite airframe that also includes additively manufactured parts, this position is responsible for inspecting carbon composite, bonded structures, metallics, and other advanced structures using ultrasonic, digital radiography, liquid penetrant, or other state of art methods. This is an opportunity to participate in developing a complete system, including influencing structural design, fabrication methods, and operational support of new aircraft. Hands-on experience and a “get it done" attitude are very important for this position. This position is rewarding, as the engineer will promptly see their ideas grow from concept to creation due to the fast pace of Joby Aviation.

As the NDT Responsible Level III, you will provide necessary leadership and guidance to the Nondestructive Inspection Team. The position will coordinate inspection tasks across sites and meet the company schedule requirements for both Development and Production.

Responsibilities

  • Technical Oversight: Establish, maintain, approve, and continuously improved the NDT Written Practice and method-specific procedures, techniques, and work instructions (e.g. UT, RT, ET, PT) across all Joby Aviation manufacturing locations
  • Compliance & Standards: Ensure adherence to applicable standards (e.g. NAS410/EN4179, AS9100/ISO9001), customer specifications, and regulatory mandates (e.g. FAA/EASA, Part 21/145), as applicable
  • Personnel Certification: Manage the qualification and certification program for Level 1 and Level 2 technicians, including the administration of both general and practical examinations
  • Method Selection: Determine the most effective NDT methods for specific applications, such as:
    o Radiographic Testing (RT)
    o Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
    o Eddy Current Testing (ET)
o Magnetic Particle (MT) & Dye Penetrant (PT)
  • Audit & Quality Control: Act as the primary point of contact for external audits (FAA/EASA, etc.) and perform internal audits to maintain high-quality standards.
  • Problem Solving: Provide expert interpretation of complex indications and act as the final arbiter on "accept/reject" decisions for critical components.

Required

  • Certification: Current Level III certification in at least two NDT methods (e.g., UT, ET, RT, PT, MT)
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering, Materials, Physics, or related field; equivalent experience considered
  • Experience: 7–10+ years in NDT with at least 3+ years at Level III or program-lead capacity in production or maintenance environments
  • Standards Knowledge: Demonstrated mastery of NAS 410/EN 4179 requirements, and AS9100/ISO 9001 quality systems
  • Regulatory: Experience in aerospace/aviation compliance (e.g., FAA Production/Repair, EASA Part-145) or similarly regulated industries

Desired

  • Experience with composite and metallic structures, welds, castings, additively manufactured parts, and bonded assemblies
  • Proven success implementing digital NDT tools (e.g., phased array UT, FMC/TFM, DR/CT, eddy array) and data management systems
