How it works

Key Takeaways

  • Automated hiring systems can screen or route resumes before human review; ResumeGeni treats ATS scoring as parser-readiness triage, not a hiring prediction (Harvard Business School & Accenture).
  • The most common ATS-readiness problems are missing keywords, incompatible formatting, incomplete fields, and incorrect file types
  • ResumeGeni scores parseability, structure, contact fields, content completeness, skills, and keyword signals, then explains the evidence behind the score

How ATS Resume Scoring Works

Applicant tracking systems parse your resume into structured data — extracting your name, contact info, work history, skills, and education — then use that data in search, review, and matching workflows. Parsing gaps can make a qualified candidate harder to evaluate.

LayerWhat It ChecksWhy It Matters
Document extractionFile format, encoding, readabilityCorrupted or image-only PDFs fail immediately
Layout analysisTables, columns, headers, footersMulti-column layouts break field extraction
Section detectionExperience, education, skills headingsNon-standard headings cause sections to be missed
Field mappingName, email, phone, dates, titlesMissing contact info is a common cause of immediate rejection
Keyword signalsJob-specific terms, skills, certificationsKeyword overlap can affect recruiter search visibility and resume-review workflows
Chronology checkDate ordering, gap detectionReverse-chronological order is expected by most ATS
QuantificationMetrics, numbers, measurable outcomesQuantified achievements help human reviewers and some scoring models
Confidence scoringOverall parse quality and completenessLow-confidence extraction means important fields may need manual review

What ResumeGeni Checks Before Keyword Matching

Keyword matching only helps after the resume can be read cleanly. ResumeGeni starts with parser-readiness signals before it evaluates wording, skills, and role fit.

  • Readable text: whether the uploaded file exposes selectable text instead of only a scanned image.
  • Standard resume structure: whether contact, summary, work experience, education, and skills sections are easy to identify.
  • Field extraction: whether names, email addresses, phone numbers, employers, titles, dates, degrees, and skills can be mapped into stable fields.
  • Format risk: whether tables, columns, text boxes, decorative icons, headers, footers, or unusual bullets could interrupt parsing.
  • Evidence quality: whether experience bullets include scope, tools, metrics, and outcomes rather than generic duty lists.
  • Keyword coverage: whether relevant tools, certifications, industry terms, and role-specific phrases appear naturally in the resume.

What Your ATS Score Means

The score is a diagnostic signal, not a hiring guarantee. A high score means ResumeGeni can extract and evaluate the resume with fewer warnings. A low score means the resume likely needs structural fixes before keyword tuning matters.

Score RangeReadBest Next Action
90-100Strong parser readiness with few visible gapsTailor keywords and achievements to the target role
75-89Generally readable, but some sections or evidence may be weakFix warnings, add measurable achievements, and tighten skills
60-74Important content may be missing, vague, or hard to mapRepair structure before rewriting bullets
Below 60Parsing or completeness issues are likely holding the resume backMove to a cleaner format and rebuild core sections first

What To Fix First

Start with problems that prevent a system or recruiter from reading the resume. Save small wording changes for after the structure is clean.

PriorityFixReason
1Use a text-based PDF, DOCX, or plain text resumeImage-only files and corrupted exports cannot be reliably parsed
2Use one column and standard headingsPredictable structure improves section and field detection
3Put contact information in the body, not only the headerSome parsers ignore header and footer regions
4Replace vague duties with quantified achievementsSpecific outcomes help both recruiter review and scoring evidence
5Mirror role language truthfullyRelevant keywords help search and review without keyword stuffing

How To Use the Score Without Overfitting

The best use of an ATS score is triage. Fix problems that make the resume hard to parse or hard to evaluate, then stop when the document is clear. Do not chase a perfect score by adding keywords you cannot defend in an interview or by turning every bullet into a list of tools.

Checker signalGood correctionCorrection to avoid
Low parse confidenceMove to a single-column layout, standard headings, and selectable text.Adding more keywords before the resume can be read cleanly.
Weak evidence bulletsRewrite duties into scope, action, tool, and measurable outcome.Inflating impact numbers or copying sample bullets that do not match your work.
Missing role termsAdd truthful tools, certifications, patient loads, stack details, or workflows from your experience.Keyword stuffing a skills section with technologies you have not used.
Thin company fitCompare the resume with the target role and company application guide before applying.Submitting the same generic version to every employer.

Methodology And Limits

ResumeGeni checks format, extraction, content completeness, and keyword signals from the uploaded resume. It does not certify that every employer ATS will parse the file the same way, and it does not predict whether a recruiter will interview you.

For the scoring rubric, privacy notes, and limitations, read the ATS Resume Checker Methodology. For the broader source map behind ResumeGeni guidance, use the research hub and dated research data dashboard. For application context, use the exact company application guide or role guide that matches the job.

What the Checker Can Diagnose

Treat the ATS resume checker as a document-readiness diagnostic, not a hiring prediction. A useful check should tell you whether the resume text can be extracted, whether the major sections are recognizable, whether contact fields are present, whether bullets contain evidence, and whether role language appears naturally enough for a reviewer to understand the match.

Diagnostic areaWhat ResumeGeni looks forBest correction
Text extractionSelectable text, readable file structure, and parser confidence.Use a text-based PDF, DOCX, or pasted text version before changing wording.
Section recognitionStandard headings for contact, summary, experience, education, skills, projects, and certifications.Rename creative headings to conventional resume sections and keep content in the document body.
Evidence qualityBullets with scope, action, tools, and measurable outcomes rather than generic duties.Rewrite the most recent role first, then work backward through older experience.
Role alignmentTruthful keywords, credentials, systems, technologies, and responsibilities that match the target role.Compare the resume with a role guide and a real posting before adding or removing terms.

Pair the Score With a Role Guide

An ATS score is the starting point. After the resume is readable, compare it with the role you are targeting so your skills, bullets, and keywords match the actual posting without keyword stuffing.

Where This Checker Fits in the Application Path

Use the checker as a diagnostic gate between drafting and applying. It is strongest when the next action is specific: fix parsing risks, rewrite vague bullets, add missing role evidence, or compare the resume against a real posting. It is weaker when treated as a hiring predictor or a substitute for role judgment.

Sources Used For This Checker

ResumeGeni's checker combines product analysis with public resume-writing, occupational, and structured-data references. These sources inform parser-readiness guidance; they do not certify that any employer or ATS vendor will score a resume the same way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ResumeGeni free?
Yes. ATS analysis, scoring, and initial improvement suggestions are free with no signup required. Full guidance and saved reports may require a free account.
What file formats are supported?
PDF, DOCX, DOC, TXT, RTF, ODT, and Apple Pages. PDF and DOCX are recommended for best ATS compatibility.
How is the ATS score calculated?
Your resume is parsed into structured fields such as contact information, experience, education, and skills. The score reflects how cleanly ResumeGeni can extract those fields plus format, content, and keyword signals.
Can ATS read PDF resumes?
Yes, but not all PDFs are equal. Text-based PDFs parse well. Image-only PDFs (scanned documents) and PDFs with complex tables or multi-column layouts often fail ATS parsing. Our analyzer will flag these issues.
How do I improve my ATS score?
Focus on three areas: use a clean single-column format, include keywords from the job description naturally in your experience bullets, and ensure all sections (contact, experience, education, skills) use standard headings.

About Hiya

At Hiya, we're making calls safe, useful, and human again.

Voice is the most human form of communication, yet it's become one of the least trusted. Spam, scams, and AI manipulation have eroded what was once a simple way to connect.

Each month our AI voice technology analyzes 28+ billion calls, protecting over 550 million users and 800+ businesses worldwide. Partnering with a growing global network including, AT&T, Samsung, British Telecom EE, Rogers, MasOrange, Bell Canada, MasMovil, and Virgin Media O2, we're not just stopping bad actors, we're helping people feel good and confident about picking up the phone again.

This is a pivotal moment for voice. As new threats and technologies accelerate, so does demand for trusted voice communication. Hiya is growing 40%+ year over year, expanding globally, and defining what voice becomes next.

Join us. You won't just work on what voice is today, you'll shape what it becomes tomorrow: smarter, safer, and genuinely worth answering again.

About the Role

We're looking for a builder-minded Product Manager to help shape the future of Hiya Spam Blocker and Hiya WorkPhone. This role exists because voice is at an inflection point. As AI accelerates both innovation and fraud, the work of protecting hundreds of millions of users while making calls genuinely useful again requires faster learning cycles, deeper customer understanding, and the ability to move from insight to shipped product without unnecessary friction. This role adds hands-on product capacity that lets us innovate and ship our direct consumer and business apps more quickly, while also generating learnings that inform how we bring new capabilities to telecom operators and OEM partners worldwide.

This is fundamentally a product role, but not a narrow or traditional one. You'll uncover unmet needs, explore possible solutions, test ideas quickly, and help bring the strongest ones to market. You'll work closely with customers and cross-functional partners across engineering, design, marketing, support, and product. At times, you may take an idea from early discovery through launch largely independently. In other cases, you'll lead a team through that process collaboratively. In both modes, you'll be responsible for driving learning, momentum, and outcomes that strengthen Hiya's ability to restore trust and usefulness to voice communication.

What You'll Do

  • Lead product initiatives across Hiya Spam Blocker and Hiya WorkPhone from discovery through launch and iteration

  • Build a deep understanding of customer problems, behaviors, and unmet needs through research, testing, support signals, usage patterns, and direct observation

  • Identify promising opportunities and translate them into concepts, prototypes, experiments, and product improvements

  • Explore multiple possible solutions before converging, using fast learning cycles to determine what is worth building and refining

  • Use AI to accelerate discovery, synthesis, prototyping, product development, and decision-making

  • Work hands-on when appropriate to move ideas forward, whether by creating prototypes, validating concepts, or independently driving a solution from beginning to end

  • Partner closely with engineering, design, marketing, support, and product counterparts to build and launch high-impact experiences

  • Establish strong feedback loops by measuring how people use our products, learning from the results, and translating those insights into continuous product improvements

  • Help shape product positioning, launch readiness, and go-to-market planning for new features and experiences

  • Generate learnings through our mobile apps that help inform Hiya’s broader product strategy and the solutions we bring to telecom operators and OEMs

  • Serve as a trusted partner to the Mobile Apps PM, helping provide continuity across workstreams and stepping into leadership on key initiatives as needed

  • Model and encourage a modern way of working where teams stay close to customers, learn quickly, and take shared ownership for outcomes

What “Builder” Means in This Role

In this role, “builder” means taking ownership for turning customer understanding into real-world outcomes.

That may mean:

  • deeply investigating the problems that inform our solutions

  • creating prototypes, features and even end-to-end experiences yourself

  • using AI tools to accelerate iteration and learning

  • running fast tests to validate usability, value, or demand

  • instrumenting what ships, studying behavior, and using those signals to improve the product

  • independently carrying an idea from concept to launch when the scope and context make that possible

  • helping teams operate with more autonomy, curiosity, and speed

We’re looking for someone who can work with humility, move fluidly between solo ownership and cross-functional collaboration, and stay focused on learning what will create the most value for customers.

What Success Looks Like

  • Key product initiatives ship on time with measurable improvements in user protection, engagement, retention, or satisfaction, directly supporting Hiya's mission to restore trust in voice communication

  • Product decisions are grounded in real customer understanding and validated through testing, data, and behavioral signals, improving the quality of what we build and reducing wasted effort

  • Learnings from our mobile apps inform and accelerate capabilities we bring to operator and OEM partners, strengthening Hiya's ability to scale protection and trust across networks globally

  • Cross-functional partners consistently see you as a trusted collaborator who raises the quality of product thinking, helps teams move faster with clarity, and takes ownership for outcomes

What We're Looking For

Required

  • Experience in product management or a similar role, ideally in mobile, consumer, SaaS, or other fast-learning product environments

  • Consumer mobile app experience, especially in growth

  • Strong instincts for identifying meaningful customer problems and evaluating which opportunities matter most

  • Experience using and running research, testing, observation, or behavioral data to shape product direction

  • A track record of taking products, features, or experiments from idea to launch and iteration

  • Data literacy for setup up actionable metrics and data storytelling

  • Comfort exploring ambiguous spaces and creating structure through inquiry, experimentation, and judgment

  • A hands-on, high-agency approach to moving work forward

  • Ability to define success, measure outcomes, and create strong feedback loops between product usage and product improvement

  • Experience working cross-functionally and driving alignment through influence rather than authority

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to connect customer insight, product strategy, execution, and go-to-market thinking

  • Comfort using AI tools to accelerate how you work and how products get built

  • A collaborative mindset, intellectual humility, and a willingness to learn new skills in service of solving problems well

  • Alignment with Hiya's values: serving our customers, doing rather than observing, improving ourselves and our business, owning and holding ourselves accountable for success, leading with a point of view, engaging in open discussion, and committing to decisions

Preferred

  • Experience in product management, product research, concept testing, AB test or other forms of customer-centered discovery

  • Experience taking zero-to-one products or features to market

  • Experience with rapid prototyping, experimentation, or concept validation

  • Experience in mobile apps or customer-facing subscription products

  • Familiarity with AI-powered products, voice technology, fraud prevention, or trust and safety

  • Experience turning product usage data and qualitative feedback into clear improvement opportunities

  • Experience contributing to go-to-market strategy, positioning, or launch planning

  • A startup, founder, or highly entrepreneurial background

How We Work

Hiya is not a passive environment. We expect people to take ownership, form opinions, and engage directly with hard problems.

We work with a high degree of transparency and autonomy. Context is shared openly, and decisions are discussed, challenged, and then made. Once a call is made, we commit and move forward.

You'll be expected to work through ambiguity, weigh tradeoffs, and take responsibility for results, while keeping a high bar for quality and customer trust.

Every team member at Hiya is expected to live our core values:

  • Serve, our customers and partners by holding a high bar for trust and quality

  • Own, share in success and open up to failures

  • Lead, listen, show up with a point of view but commit entirely once a decision has been made

  • Improve, even if it means changing course or contradicting ourselves

  • Do, rather than observe
