Key Takeaways

  • 75% of U.S. employers use automated applicant tracking systems to screen resumes before a human reviews them (Harvard Business School & Accenture, 2021)
  • The most common ATS failures are missing keywords, incompatible formatting, and incorrect file types
  • ResumeGeni scores your resume across 8 parsing layers — modeled on the same steps enterprise ATS platforms like Workday, Greenhouse, and Taleo use to evaluate candidates

How ATS Resume Scoring Works

Applicant tracking systems parse your resume into structured data — extracting your name, contact info, work history, skills, and education — then score how well that data matches the job requirements. Many ATS rejections happen because the parser couldn't extract critical fields, not because the candidate wasn't qualified.

LayerWhat It ChecksWhy It Matters
Document extractionFile format, encoding, readabilityCorrupted or image-only PDFs fail immediately
Layout analysisTables, columns, headers, footersMulti-column layouts break field extraction
Section detectionExperience, education, skills headingsNon-standard headings cause sections to be missed
Field mappingName, email, phone, dates, titlesMissing contact info is a common cause of immediate rejection
Keyword matchingJob-specific terms, skills, certificationsKeyword overlap affects recruiter search visibility and ATS scoring
Chronology checkDate ordering, gap detectionReverse-chronological order is expected by most ATS
QuantificationMetrics, numbers, measurable outcomesQuantified achievements help human reviewers and some scoring models

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ResumeGeni free?
Yes. ResumeGeni is currently in beta — ATS analysis, scoring, and initial improvement suggestions are free with no signup required. Full guidance and saved reports may require a free account.
What file formats are supported?
PDF, DOCX, DOC, TXT, RTF, ODT, and Apple Pages. PDF and DOCX are recommended for best ATS compatibility.
How is the ATS score calculated?
Your resume is processed through an 8-layer parsing pipeline that extracts structured data the same way enterprise ATS platforms do. The score reflects how completely and accurately your resume can be parsed, plus how well your content matches common ATS ranking criteria.
Can ATS read PDF resumes?
Yes, but not all PDFs are equal. Text-based PDFs parse well. Image-only PDFs (scanned documents) and PDFs with complex tables or multi-column layouts often fail ATS parsing. Our analyzer will flag these issues.
How do I improve my ATS score?
Focus on three areas: use a clean single-column format, include keywords from the job description naturally in your experience bullets, and ensure all sections (contact, experience, education, skills) use standard headings.

Heartaerospace · Los Angeles, CA

At Heart Aerospace we develop the ES-30, a regional hybrid-electric airplane with a capacity of 30 passengers, an electric zero-emission range of 200 km and an extended hybrid range of 400 km. Heart is targeting type certification of the ES-30 by the end of the decade.

Your mission

We are seeking a highly motivated Power Electronics Engineer to join our Propulsion team. You will lead the design and integration of the hybrid propulsion, including but not limited to the inverters, motors, HV cables, with batteries, and in parallel with Turbomachinery. You will interface across mechanical, thermal, electrical, and flight control systems to deliver a fully integrated and certifiable hybrid Electric Propulsion Unit (EPU).

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • This role is a Responsible Engineer (RE) who focuses on the integration of power electronics and high voltage electrical systems into our hybrid aircraft.
  • Full ownership over design, fabrication, commissioning, and certification of the hybrid propulsion system.
  • Lead and execute system-level tests, such as motor and propeller test stands.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to ensure delivery of integrated, certifiable subsystems.
  • Model the electrical and power electronics systems in to our high fidelity Digital Twin for optimization of our hybrid mission profile.
  • Perform topology selection trade studies.

You'll Bring These Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of professional experience working with power electronics components.
  • Strong experience in high voltage power electronics design (+800V) including AC/DC inverters, and DC/DC converters.
  • Strong understanding of HV filter design, grounding analysis, coordination of protective devices.
  • Hands-on experience with integration of propulsion and/or powertrain test stands, including instrumentation, controls, and mechanical assembly.
  • Extensive experience with Altium/cadence/similar), circuit analysis (spice), gate driver design, and lab work (common tools like oscilloscopes, network analyzers)
  • Experience with C/C++, Python, Matlab/Simulink, or PLECS.
  • Strong knowledge of Avionics communication, ARINC, CAN, and Ethernet.
  • Strong understanding of Microcontrollers, Multicore processors, Firmware Development, and digital power conversion.

These Qualifications Would Be Nice to Have:

  • Understanding of certification requirements (EASA CS-23/25 or FAA FAR Part 23/25).
  • Knowledge of hardware design and airworthiness DO-178C, DO-254, DO-160.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities through cross-functional teamwork on challenging problems.
