About the role

This is a key role within our Montreal-based FX team.

This role will be required to be onsite at least 2 days per week per our hybrid policy.

Relocation assistance provided as necessary.

Reporting to the Head of FX, The FX Supervisor is responsible for leading a team of FX Artists and Leads and managing the day-to-day production needs. The FX Supervisor will supervise the FX team in the technical and artistic aspects of the visual effects production to ensure the highest-quality photorealistic simulations of FX are produced.

What you’ll do:

  • Manage and lead a team of FX TDs to supply the FX elements for film projects

  • Mentor and motivate your team of FX Artists to grow their craft using the latest techniques and tools

  • Create natural (and unnatural) phenomena utilising simulations in particles, rigid-bodies, fluids etc. and other procedural or stochastic systems

  • Work with Production to break down task requirements and assign shots to artists

  • Help build the team by being involved in recruitment

  • Work closely with the FX HOD to ensure the team are producing high quality work

  • Work closely with the Pipeline department, providing suggestions and feedback to improve setup, visual quality and tool functionality

  • Convey any relevant and useful information across sites and departments to their respective FX Teams

  • Meet schedules and show deadlines

  • Communicate with Production regarding the teams' schedules and deadlines

  • Work efficiently as part of a team, or independently, to complete assigned shots

  • Submit shots for review and follow through with the teams' notes and feedback if required

  • Continue to become familiar with new tools, software, data and other related technology

Requirements

What we’re looking for:

  • Must have a minimum of 10 years as an FX TD and previous experience as an FX Lead or Supervisor

  • Extensive knowledge of Houdini

  • Proven experience in producing effects such as smoke, fire, clouds, water, steam and explosions, plus experience with particle and voxel based rendering

  • An eye for details, good sense of timing, and thorough understanding of techniques and technologies relating to physical simulation in computer graphics

  • Familiarity with pipeline issues and problem solving

  • Experienced in project management, balancing quality with time constraints

  • High level feature film experience in live action VFX Films

  • Good experience in leading and training teams of FX Artists

  • Excellent in artistic and technical skills

  • Able to provide artistic and technical solutions to Effects Team

  • A good understanding of the entire visual effects process

  • A familiarity with pipeline issues, especially working between multiple packages.

  • Strong problem solving and multi-tasking skills

  • Working knowledge of Python (and/or Mel)
