Key Takeaways

  • 75% of U.S. employers use automated applicant tracking systems to screen resumes before a human reviews them (Harvard Business School & Accenture, 2021)
  • The most common ATS failures are missing keywords, incompatible formatting, and incorrect file types
  • ResumeGeni scores your resume across 8 parsing layers — modeled on the same steps enterprise ATS platforms like Workday, Greenhouse, and Taleo use to evaluate candidates

How ATS Resume Scoring Works

Applicant tracking systems parse your resume into structured data — extracting your name, contact info, work history, skills, and education — then score how well that data matches the job requirements. Many ATS rejections happen because the parser couldn't extract critical fields, not because the candidate wasn't qualified.

LayerWhat It ChecksWhy It Matters
Document extractionFile format, encoding, readabilityCorrupted or image-only PDFs fail immediately
Layout analysisTables, columns, headers, footersMulti-column layouts break field extraction
Section detectionExperience, education, skills headingsNon-standard headings cause sections to be missed
Field mappingName, email, phone, dates, titlesMissing contact info is a common cause of immediate rejection
Keyword matchingJob-specific terms, skills, certificationsKeyword overlap affects recruiter search visibility and ATS scoring
Chronology checkDate ordering, gap detectionReverse-chronological order is expected by most ATS

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ResumeGeni free?
Yes. ResumeGeni is currently in beta — ATS analysis, scoring, and initial improvement suggestions are free with no signup required. Full guidance and saved reports may require a free account.
What file formats are supported?
PDF, DOCX, DOC, TXT, RTF, ODT, and Apple Pages. PDF and DOCX are recommended for best ATS compatibility.
How is the ATS score calculated?
Your resume is processed through an 8-layer parsing pipeline that extracts structured data the same way enterprise ATS platforms do. The score reflects how completely and accurately your resume can be parsed, plus how well your content matches common ATS ranking criteria.
Can ATS read PDF resumes?
Yes, but not all PDFs are equal. Text-based PDFs parse well. Image-only PDFs (scanned documents) and PDFs with complex tables or multi-column layouts often fail ATS parsing. Our analyzer will flag these issues.
How do I improve my ATS score?
Focus on three areas: use a clean single-column format, include keywords from the job description naturally in your experience bullets, and ensure all sections (contact, experience, education, skills) use standard headings.

Chronosphere

Chronosphere is the observability platform built for control in the modern, containerized world. Chronosphere empowers customers to focus on the data and insights that matter by reducing data complexity, optimizing costs, and remediating issues faster. The observability platform reduces data volumes and associated costs by 60% on average while saving developers thousands of hours. Chronosphere’s Fluent Bit-based Telemetry Pipeline optimizes and simplifies observability and security log data. The product transforms logs at the source and routes them to any destination without lock-in.

Recognized as a leader by major analyst firms, Chronosphere is trusted by the world’s most innovative brands, including Snap, Robinhood, DoorDash, and Zillow. Learn more at Chronosphere.io. Follow at LinkedIn and X.

About the role

Our product is an industrial-scale software-as-a-service observability platform. You will drive implementation and delivery of high-impact features within Control, the team building Chronosphere’s telemetry control, traffic shaping, and cost control system. This system gives customers fine-grained control over their observability data, complexity, and noise while preserving signal and performance.

You will collaborate directly with Product, Design, and Engineering peers to build intuitive capabilities that empower customers to shape telemetry traffic, manage high-cardinality data, and enforce usage policies and budgets across their organization, operating at data volumes spanning hundreds of millions of telemetry events per second.

You will

  • Design, implement, and test enhancements to Control APIs and services, including rule evaluation, policy enforcement, advanced optimizations, and real-time usage insights, using Go on Kubernetes / GCP.

  • Build scalable systems for telemetry shaping and cost control, such as ingest policies, aggregation, sampling policies, utility scores & recommendations, and usage-based controls.

  • Partner closely with Product and Design to deliver customer-facing experiences that make it easy to understand telemetry cost drivers and take safe, effective action.

  • Own the operational quality of what you ship: instrumentation, alerting, debugging, incident response, and performance tuning for production workloads.

  • Collaborate across product, design, platform, infrastructure, and developer experience teams to integrate Control decisions into the broader ingestion, query, and storage ecosystem.

What you will achieve

In the first month, you will build a deep understanding of Chronosphere’s platform and begin contributing to Control features. You will learn how customers use observability at scale, how telemetry flows through the system, and where telemetry shaping and cost control create leverage.

Within 90 days, you will have shipped several impactful enhancements to Control and contributed to designs shaping the direction of the system. You will become a go-to person in one or more areas, such as rule evaluation, cardinality controls, usage insights, or production reliability.

You have

  • Curiosity and motivation to learn deep, complex domains.

  • A proven track record building high-quality, scalable systems, including experience working on complex, performance-sensitive services in production.

  • Strong skills in a systems language such as Go, C++, Java, C#, or Rust. Knowing a specific language isn’t important; what matters is fluency built through real-world engineering work.

  • A habit of seeking feedback to improve your work and the ability to ask for help when you need it.

  • The ability to independently own projects from inception to delivery (plan, gather requirements, collaborate with stakeholders, and execute with operational maturity).

  • Excitement for working on a product engineering team and building features that create direct customer value, especially around cost control, optimizations, and reliability.

  • A flexible, collaborative working style. We’re a small team operating in a rapidly evolving space, and we’re looking for people who will help build a supportive, high-trust environment.
