Job Description

Brown Advisory is currently seeking a professional and client-focused individual to fill a Strategic Advisor role based out of our Austin office location. Strategic Advisors are essential in Brown Advisory’s effort to provide holistic financial guidance to clients. They are professionals (typically, attorneys, accountants or financial planners) with expertise in various related planning topics, including tax planning, trust and estate planning, accounting, fiduciary matters, and business advisory. For affluent families with significant portfolios and complex financial circumstances, focusing exclusively on investment returns is simply not enough, and other difficult issues—taxes, estate planning, intergenerational wealth transfers, family businesses, family dynamics and philanthropic aspirations, among others—often matter as much or more for such families than portfolio returns. In addition, these issues require a thoughtful planning process that can take years or decades to come to fruition. That’s why Brown Advisory employs a “strategic advisory” approach for its clients that complements its investment management expertise.

Paired with a Private Client Portfolio Manager, a Strategic Advisor (“SA”) is responsible for developing and executing plans on a wide range of issues in coordination with a client’s outside advisors, including:

  • Income and tax planning

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic advice for a broad array of individual, family and trust portfolio subjects.

  • Manage client relationships in coordination with the Private Client team, including serving as the primary relationship manager in many instances.

  • Create and/or actively participate in the development of strategic advice for clients firm wide in coordination with the Strategic Advisory and Private Client Portfolio Management teams.

  • Maintain active contact with known referral source relationships and prospects and proactively develop new business opportunities. Act as self-starter capable of managing long-term relationships and initiating and cultivating new client relationships.

  • Develop opportunities with existing clients to provide additional services and manage additional assets.

  • Coordinate presentations of the firm’s strategic advisory capabilities, including developing content and managing meetings for prospective clients and their advisors.

  • Participate in the development of new ideas, planning and execution of Private Client business development strategies with senior management and other team members.

  • Demonstrate and implement knowledge of strategic tax planning as well as various asset classes and investment management styles, asset allocation techniques, and investment strategies.

  • Operate independently with a high level of direct responsibility, while maintaining strong ties to the Strategic Advisory team.

  • Develop the confidence and trust necessary to develop deep and lasting client relationships and to pursue prospective new business opportunities.

Qualifications

  • JD or CPA required.

  • Significant experience with implementing wealth management planning strategies through 10+ years of experience either (1) working in a law firm or accounting firm on estate planning, wealth management, or business and tax planning, or (2) working in an investment firm on wealth management matters for high-net-worth individuals or entities.

  • Sophistication and technical expertise to provide advice and guidance on a broad range of wealth management and strategic planning strategies.

  • Familiarity with sophisticated investment strategies.

  • Ability to convey a consultative approach to client relationship management and business development and display a broad knowledge base to clients and referral sources.

  • Ability to work in the Austin office.
