12 Years Designing for Job Seekers

I spent 12 years in the hiring technology industry, rising from Design Engineer to VP of Design. During that time, I focused on creating user experiences that help job seekers and recruiters connect more effectively.

Working in this space, I observed how recruiters actually review resumes—the famous "6-second scan" is real. I conducted user research with both job seekers and hiring managers, learning what catches their eye and what gets overlooked.

That industry experience is why I built Resume Geni. Most resume advice comes from people who've never worked in hiring technology. I bring a product designer's perspective to help you create resumes that communicate your value clearly and effectively.

What I've Learned About Effective Resumes

  • The "6-second scan" is real - Through user research, I've observed how recruiters review resumes. If your resume doesn't communicate value instantly, you're passed over.
  • Clear formatting matters - Industry research shows that clean, simple formatting gets better results than creative designs that may not parse well.
  • Keywords need context - It's not just about having the right keywords. They need to appear in meaningful context that demonstrates actual experience.
  • Quantified achievements stand out - Numbers catch the eye. "Increased revenue 40%" beats "responsible for sales growth" every time.
  • User experience principles apply - A resume is a product. Apply the same UX principles: clarity, hierarchy, scannability, and clear calls to action.
